PING Annoyance

Is it just games that run on the same version of the Frostbite engine as BF4?

I've had no ends of problems network behaviour wise - not outright lag/timeout like you seem to be getting - with them that I never got to the bottom of - could be interesting if you do find the cause as it could be related to the problems I had.

Port forwarding issue on your router maybe? Does it have a DMZ setting you can test with?

I have done all the port forwarding issue checks and made changes as suggested in various places. None fixes it sadly.

BF3 seems to work OK, maybe it is frostbyte but if that were the case surely it would impact offline play, which works fine?

It's a shame you can't easily get hold of the BF1 server IP's to run a traceroute... would be interested to see if the problem persists when you connect to a US server though.

While I dont play bf I can at least say its probably not something zens end as I am also with them & gaming is fine on the games I do play.

I did have a similiar problem years ago when I was playing rift, & I never figured out what caused it, it just mysteriously was fixed one day, so nothing my end, I switched isps before it stopped & that made no difference, so the only thing I can guess on my issue is it was a routing issue somewhere on BT's end ( I was not with BT, but ISP's use their backbone)

what fps do you get?

its possibly but unlikely that the CPU/GPU is overtaxed & This would increase ping. seen it before & would explain BF having issues but not CSS.

trying turning everything to low JUst to see if it changes at all.

If you use Avast, disable their Game Mode or whatever it's called. That pile of crap caused my ping to fluctuate between 100 to literally in the thousands for months before I knew what it was.

Potential longshot if you've tried disabling firewalls but have you tried forwarding the following ports:
  • TCP: 80,443,5222,9988,17502,20000-20100,22990,42127
  • UDP: 3659,14000-14016,22990-23006,25200-25300

Nothing to add I'm afraid, but I had a similar issue with Red Orchestra 2 a few years back. Every other game worked fine, even RO2 did during the beta. As soon as the game released I had the exact same issue, big lag spikes or just an immediate bad connection (even though I was playing on low ping servers).

It got so bad that I started getting messages on screen saying 'speedhack detected', I'd usually then get a temp/perma ban from the server. I posted in the forums but was either accused of having crap internet, a crap machine, or if just had my posts/threads deleted (as well as a few other people with the same issue). I tried several times to get back into the game over the course of a year or two, always had the same problem.

If you've exhausted every option and other games seem to work fine then it could just be the actual game at fault, as frustrating as that might be.

Run a ping to 8.8.8.8 for a good 15 minutes and post the results (in spoliler tags).

Open cmd prompt or powershell and type "ping 8.8.8.8 -t" (sorry if you already know this).

Create one of these monitors to your IP:

https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/quality

That will give us a clue if the problem is internal to your property or external... other potentially wiring to router / router fault.

It's possible you may need to enable "respond to ping / icmp" within your router settings for the quality monitor to get a response. If it's not enabled, it will all show up red.

You can find your external IP by logging into your zen customer portal or just go to www.whatismyip.com

Describe your cabling a bit more please... is the vdsl router plugged directly into the master socket or is there an internal extension in place? The cable you mention - is that between the router and wall socket or your PC and router?

If you want quicker / easier help... drop me a trust message and I'll add you on Skype or could Teamviewer into your PC if you want me to... I've been a network engineer for years and am now TD of a networking company.

@crinkleshoes test is worth doing, I was having a similar issue with Rocket League with my ping randomly spiking to 999 in games.
Ran a tracert to 8.8.8.8 and left it running I would get random response times of 400-800ms every so often.

In the end I factory reset the router with a new cable and the issue has been resolved since.

I have reset, rebuilt, re-installed everything 1 billion times :(

Netgear Nighthawk D700 running latest Firmare
Master socket in my office, router sits 2 feet from this connected directly into BT insulated point (no drop cables)
Normal copper line delivering Fibre to Cabinet
PC connected to router via cable, sits 2 feet away also.

Currently running PING to 8.8.8.8 for about 10 mins and bar 1 blip to 230ms all 12ms-13ms

I am just uploading 2 images to bring it to life, and that BATTERED my PINGS as to be expected.

I have an Arlo CCTV system, I wonder if that uploading could be an issue do you think?

2544ms PING during uploading
