Ping increased by 500% HELP!!!

I do a lot of gaming, both on the pc and ps3 and my ping is killing me. 1 minute it is fine (22ms) then it instantly increases (133ms). It is constantly changing and really annoying. I phoned my isp virgin media but they said it was fine at there side and it must be my problem.
Any advise on troubleshooting would be most appreciated!

It may be a local congestion issue. You've ruled out quite a few potential issues by connecting directly to the cable modem.
