Hi All

I have a network of about 10 machines and a few servers, as well as wireless access points and 5 network printers.

Is there a free tool out there that will constantly ping them and alert me if they go down?

As sometimes we just don't notice or staff wont tell me that something isn't working.

Hope this makes sense

Thanks
Aaron

Pinging is a very limited test, you might want to consider a free NMS. Most printers etc nowadays offer SNMP support for low toner\paper etc so you'd be able to setup notifications (mail\sms etc) to be sent when any monitored thresholds are breached. So if a device doesn't respond to x pings in a row, toner is low, hard disk is almost full yadda yadda yadda..

I'm pretty sure openNMS will cover that. But might be overkill for what you need.

I dont know about the auto alert bit but I use a piece of software called Ping Plotter to ping devices on my network.

You have to pay for their latest version but can pickup the older version from the same site for free as it was freeware.

Check it out...

Hope this helps ;)
