Pink Floyd Dark side of the moon is 50

Why is it an amazing album?

It still sounds incredible, especially the SACD version. The artwork is iconic (which is why those comments are so ridiculous), the band didn't even release a single off of it in this country and yet it's still in the top 10 best selling albums of all time.

It's a shame Roger waters has turned in to a bit of a horrible guy.

I love this album and dedicate some time to listen to it every few months (rather than listen to whilst I'm doing something else) but I can understand why some people, if they may have heard of the band but, in our modern digital age, never seen the front album cover for Dark Side, may not know that the light spectrum of the prism split light image from the cover is not specficially the "Rainbow" symbol which is currently synonymous with the LGBT etc movement, as the image chosen by the Pink Floyd Social Media team could be misconstrued by those who are unaware of the cover art, which then leads to it going viral over a misunderstanding which then drags in more non-fans who just want to complain about "Woke" without knowing the context.

Album Cover for context.

Great album - one of my favourites. I do think some fans fawn over it a bit much though, as if it’s the only great album/band. There are great artists other than Pink Floyd.

Must say… Wish You Were Here is super-overrated as an album :o :p

I just don't get the love for Pink Floyd, always thought they were overrated boring noise.

I regularly fluctuate between this and Animals as my favourite Pink Floyd album.

I have my dad to thank for my love of Pink Floyd, with it being played a lot in our house while I was growing up.

I think anyone not around when it was new would probably struggle to appreciate it. Unless, like me, they'd been brought up on it.

Yeah dumb people gonna dumb. That being said, they could have chosen a better picture. It's very, very reminiscent of the ubiquitous corporate pride month logos.

i don't think i'd know one song off the album but i sure as hell know what the cover looks like. are people really so disconnected from reality that this image is somehow creating a fuss or is it just a wind up??

WYWH is two great tracks (the first part of SOYCD and the title track) and a fair bit of filler. I rate quite a few of their albums above it tbh.

What I love about DSOTM is how distilled it is, which was never easy for Floyd.

Even if the logo is a bit poop, it’s pretty tragic that some people default to rage at the first site of a rainbow.
Sort of. I'm a big, big fan but when I see that logo I don't automatically think oh they've done the prism spectrum thing ha clever. It's on social media, where a rainbow in a logo pretty pretty much always means a specific thing, so it isn't unreasonable to think that imo. I say this while understanding there exists a group of people who are ready to be outraged, although let's not pretend "anti-woke" people are alone in this. I find the huge amount of people in the comments flocking to mock those who have made a funny mistake almost as eyeroll worthy tbh. A little bit like the mass hysteria over Greta's definitely galaxybrain Andrew Tate burn.

Too much slating of Wish You Were Here.

The Album is basically 4 tracks right, Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Wish You Were Here, Have a Cigar and Welcome to the Machine.

The former being the two best tracks (imo) Pink Floyd ever made.

Admittedly the other two are not on par, although I still don't mind either. But as an album you are basically getting 50% of the best work they ever did.

Dark Side of the Moon as an album in it's entirety is better, sure.

Animals is pretty good, but I do feel some of those go on a little though.

The Wall also has some really good tracks, both parts of In the Flesh, Comfortably Numb, but Young Lust and Run Like Hell both good also. There are some other really good tracks on that album, I quite like some of the Waters influenced ones. But as an album as a whole, some of the tracks are not great.

I don't think any of the earlier stuff or later stuff was quite as good, I didn't like the really early Sid Barret stuff, in my opinion sounded like a slightly proggy version of The Beatles, and neither Gilmore nor Waters produced anything great after they parted ways with the exception of the odd one (Gunners Dream wasn't bad, Learning to Fly etc).

If you want a good slightly under rated Floyd track listen to What Do You Want From Me, or On The Turning Away.

There aren’t many great double albums and I include The Wall in that. The last quarter or so really drags.

Gilmour Floyd was sporadically brilliant but could also be incredibly middle of the road. High Hopes and Marooned are both brilliant though.

I think that you probably would but just don't know it.

Animals truly is a superb album, I think it's massively underrated.

I've seen them live a couple of times, the sound of the entire stadium singing along to Shine on and WYWH is something to experience. Utterly indescribable.

I was never really a fan of the Syd Barrett era either.

Must get my tattoo finished one day. It's been a few years.

I also like The Final Cut but the original released version, without When The Tigers Broke Free shoehorned in. Nothing wrong with that song, it's very powerful but it just doesn't feel right to me as being part of the album. I accept it's basically a Waters solo album with Gilmour and Mason playing second fiddle and no Rick Wright at all but it still has the Floyd moniker on it and I enjoy it.

Agree hard @ Syd era, not sure I agree with your next statement as I love Division Bell (although I appreciate it is objectively not as up there as earlier albums, it's definitely great in my eyes), and it seems you don't mind it either given your enjoyment of what do you want form me?

Yea what I said is that I didn't like the earlier or later stuff as much, then go on specifically say I wasn't a fan of the very early Sid Barret stuff.
