I like it. It's a good place to add favourite photos and places I want to visit e.g. http://pinterest.com/thelandbeyond/beauty-in-decay/ You don't have to follow people who add pictures of wedding dresses etc. Follow your interests...
I don't think it was particularly targeted at females, but the invites thing is always a good marketing ploy as it makes it seem more exclusive. Saying that, if anyone wants an invite I have some spare!
