Pipex 12m contract & port Throttling

the throttling or packet shaping is most applied to p2p and torrent services, legal or otherwise. some users of "f2pipex" are also reporting throttling of usenet services

F2S and Pipex are now throttling/shaping Usenet services. I can only pull 120kb/s at peak times (5pm to 11pm) but then it goes back to my normal of 400-500kb/s

Doesn't bother me hugely as anything i'm downloading from Usenet is running in the background and my pc is on 24/7

Word from F2S is that there allowing a fair amount of usage within a month (<100gb) which is more than enough imo.

I thought it wa sold news about having to pay out of the 12 month contract and that Pipex traffic shape now.

Saying that if your on a 8mb unlimited connection then it doesn't really matter if you are shaped between 6pm-11pm, because you have more than enough time in the rest of the day to get whatever you want. And if you don't then you should seriously be looking at your usage.

I use usenet and i never see less that 230-240KB/s, im on F2S also.

But that said their bandwidth monitoring is completely wrong,

I don't think all of the domains are being throttled.

I am still on the original pipe (the original xtreme login) and have had no issues at all with speeds, not been told off for downloading too much either. They seem to be totally ignoring us where as people on xtreme4 etc are complaining no end.

Although I am moving house so will be changing isp soon.

While the 12 months contracts and traffic shaping for heavy users is old news it seems they've gone overboard now and are planning on traffic shaping many things not by port but by protocol which means theres less or nothing you can do if affected.

This is going to happen 24/7 apparently, i don't see how they can get away with this sort of thing as its taking away the users right to choose how they use their paid for service, i would prefer to be capped reasonably than have degraded speeds for certain things, how can they single out something like bit torrent when its got many perfectly legal uses and what will happen when iptv takes off?

I don't know about others but i just find what they're doing very underhanded and wrong, they don't even let people know what's going on by email so how could anyone agree to a contract change?

I recently ditched Pipex. The adsl package called their 'unlmimited' service was subject to 'account management', which if you abused the 'peak hours' (which were between 6am and midnight). then your speeds would be capped low, very low. This was for anyweb activity aswell, usenet, movies, mail, surfing, gaming everything.

Just thought i'd share this in case anyone needs some info regarding Pipex.

I'm on Pipex and get shaped. It kicks in dead on 6pm and ends dead on 11:30pm. You can still browse fine, i play css fine on it. You can still upload at the normal speed, but downloading is limited to about 60k. But saying that I've gobe over that with a busy torrent. Its not as bad as you think. And the account is still technically unlimited. We're getting to the stage where ISPs have to do this to ensure a decent level of service at peak times for everyone. It could be worse.

Pipex used to be fantastic, now you're lucky if you don't have to wait 20 minutes in a queue to talk to someone, as mentioned, after 6pm the service is dire. I don't think £34.99 for a 2mb connection is a reasonable price any more. Luckily my 12 month contract was up at the end of January so I'm now hanging on the phone (15 minutes so far) waiting to get a Mac/cbuk code.

Edit: Finally got my MAC code from them, the bloke I spoke to asked me (in his most offhand voice) why I wanted to leave, I told them I didn't like queuing for so long to talk to someone, I wasn't happy with their prices or their service. Far from trying to tempt me with any kind of special offer (that the email they sent with the MAC code mentioned he should have) he sounded like he really didn't give a stuff.

more pipex shaping info here:

i am on pipex (well tomorrow i migrate to eclipse \o/ )

what annoys me about them is the offhand way they treat their customers.

for example..they introduce traffic shaping. ok, they need to ensure everyone has a speedy connection; why cant they just email everyone and tell them??

i recommended them to a friend, who migrated to them from aol. he wants to use BT for whatever reason. He is downloading at 21k. on a 2mb line.

this isnt a guy who downloads 200 gig a month--he has just joined them 1 week ago.

and another thing; you know that orange advert with the wiseman in the limo ? "wiseman says, we must look after our existing customers as well as attracting new ones"

---- they have not done this.

theres me on 1 mb @£23-58 per month.

my friend down the road has been with them for a year pays £33-something for 2mb.

another friend who migrated from aol to them is on 2mb for £24.

now if they played fair they would (imo of course) reduced down the road friends fee to 24 quid.

while they were at it, they could have either upgraded me to 2mb and charged me 50 pence extra, OR just charged me less.

but they dont do that and they dont send emails out informing you of any options.

so now my friend is migrating to zen and i am migrating to eclipse.

coupled with the dodgy dns servers they seem to have, and grumpy, sulky staff i am so happy to be leaving them.

i fall in the 20 gig per month catagory.
i dont think this is excessive;but if it is.. why dont they just say "this service is intended for users who transfer <insert amount here> ??

pipex=bleh.
