Piracy and sales

Denuvo was "cracked" if you want to call it that already, just fyi (it was more like a work around)
Piracy will always be around.

Piracy I'm sure has affected bottom line but it's probably also used to explain lower than projected sales to share holders.

I haven't seen a single good study on the effects of piracy as they all seem to take total downloads as lost sales which just isn't the case.

With so many games no online, or at least talking to online systems, I would have thought that it would have been easier to control pirated games?

It does probably have a decent impact, not a huge one though. Other factors are far more important when it comes to sales performance.

However, I'm really glad denuvo came about. The tears that it has extracted from pirates are beyond measure. Have a quick look at the comments section of a denuvo game for your daily free entertainment. The initial smear campaign was also hilarious.

To me the high seas is a demo, if its good enough you get my money otherwise its wasting my HD space. :p

Apart from they most likely don't, right? This reason always comes up but I would argue that it's a fallacy.

Nowhere else in life is it seen as ok to steal something to see if it's to your taste. Nowhere else in life do thieves go back and pay for the thing they just stole because they find out they like what the stole.

You're not stealing from the rich to provide for the poor. You're just stealing from people who work unreasonable hours and endure high levels of stress to entertain you.

Like it or not it is known that game demos generally do not help sell more games. I know that the pirate games I played when I was younger, even the ones I liked, I never paid for. Even though I went into it with the same reasoning as you.

Here's some videos that I agree with to show you where I'm coming from with my opinion. Hopefully you can consider changing your approach to doing more research before buying games, instead of using piracy as your solution.

Edit: apologies, got so passionate I forgot to say that the figure I always remember was an estimate by UKIE of around 4:1 ratio for pirate games to legitimate retail. Here's a link. As mentioned by others, I don't believe those translate to any accurate estimate on lost sales.

It is worth considering how that may compare with second hand sales, which arguable could be as impactful if not moreso. Not that I think cosumers should lose their right to sell on their games, definately not. I would rather you bought second hand than pirated, all day long. :)

Truthfully I have only ever pirated one game and that was because the copy I had bought had such **** poor DRM that it wouldn't run on my PC at the time.

Sometimes I wish we would still get demos. I really am fed up of the whole huge promises to be completely shocked come release.

I can't believe the 4-1 pirated to legit ratio. I wonder how they're arriving at such figures.

Is that piracy if you have a copy?

I once downloaded a copy of CoD MW2 to play the campaign again. I had a copy, and had the product key but had lost the DVD. I felt no different as I'd already paid for the game.

I'm not 100% sure but I would imagine it's still piracy.

At the least probably supporting copyright infringement downloading a modified release.

Maybe when games companies stop releasing goddawful games on day one and using the community to beta test, or charging large amounts for a game that is <20 hours piracy would reduce.
