Piracy: Would this work?

web-based dgital downloads direct from each developer to eliminate the need for a hundred different clients (login with a username and password like you're logging onto a forum)

Next question, how do you stop people giving their friends access to their account on the website which would enable them to download whatever you have purchased? Well you could do this in a number of ways....

1.Each game purchased is embedded with a unique CD key which would obviously prevent two clients using the same copy of the game for multiplayer purposes
2.Focus on strengthening the multiplayer aspect of the game which would entice people to buy it for access to that aspect.
3.Drive prices right down: Which would you be more likely to pirate; a game which costs $5 or a game which costs $50...big difference. I know I'd think twice about the $50 game and would probably pirate it first to see if i liked it but a $5 game? I wouldn't really care if it held my attention for longer than a day - it's cheaper than a cinema ticket and lasts more than 2 hours!

If devs could afford to put up their new games at < 20 quid release prices, rather than 35+, it would be worth the hassle of setting up another content management system for me.
Personally i just wish steam was cheaper, love it. I hate cd-keys, had to repurchase BF 2142 last month when some mates wanted a game becasue i'd left the box and cd-key at home - even though i could log into my EA account and see that i had the game registered against me there was no way of just downloading it like you can with steam.

Every game should have a steam key.

Nope, wouldn't make any difference to me. I have no interest in downloading a game from anywhere, I want an actual disc & printed manual thanks.

What would make a difference is actually removing all the DRM rubbish and stop making me jump through hoops just to play the game. I can just about cope with CD keys and having to physically have the disc in the drive to play, but that is all.

I'm not a big piracy fan and I do like to support developers of good games by buying their products, but as soon as I see online activation/securom/starforce/that steam rubbish I don't care how good the game is, I ain't buying.

In rare cases games are worth their full release price - TF2 and L4D would comfortably be worth £50 each IMHO.

I would happily buy games direct from the Devs with none going to say EA for £25. ATM I buy valve games and pirate the rest - esp EA(which isn't many, honest) :).

will not pirate ever again.

the company's deserve the money !

If the game is good.

Thankfully, demos are becoming more commonplace, but I'm still not willing to shell out 30 notes on something that might suck butt, so I keep my money until I am sure, and spend most of my time playing games purchased through Steam weekend deals :D
