Sorry for the stupid question but I don't know the answer to this.

Is PiVPN used to access the network it's set up on from anywhere you are in the world? If I set this up on my network, can I then access it through a VPN client when I'm not connected to the network?

That's exactly what i use it for and it works very well.

I've got it installed on pi1 b alongside pi-hole which also means i can connect through the VPN from any where in the world and not have to suffer any adverts either

Does it matter which is installed first? I have pi hole and already

I can't find the link right now but there is a guide somewhere to install both although I don't think it matters either way. You just need to configure the VPN to use pihole.
