Hi Guys,

Im going out to South Africa and had contacted o2 to unlock my Pixel Xl but they said they cannot as per below

Thank you for your unlatching request for IMEI **********2. The
mobile number that you provided is 07**********.

I'm sorry, we have not been able to unlatch your device at this time.
The reason given is:

This is not an O2 device, it will not be possible for us to provide an
unlatching code.
Thank you,
O2 Customer Service

Any idea why this is? So does that mean my phone is unlocked already and who should unlock it if its not

If you buy from EE it comes unlocked, I did this just the other day.

If it's on a contract it can't be unlocked for 6 months, however if it's bought PAYG then it can be unlocked straight away. This was the only way I could find a handset (CPWH were all out of stock) so I just did the later of the two options.

It depends where you bought the phone from originally. If from CPWH or Google direct then it should be unlocked already.

Where did you buy the phone? Usually if bought from the network directly then it will be locked. If bought from Google or a 3rd party like CPW then it will be unlocked.

I will check when I get home to see if it's unlocked O2 did say to contact the on 202 and register the Imei so they can unlock so I'm even more confused now lol

Unless you're super unlucky and it's like their iPhones which inexplicably lock to the first sim that goes in then handily all the networks claim they've never heard of the phone when you try and unlock it.

I suspect that might be iPhone only but definitely try a different sim before you're out of the country

It should be unlocked already then. Maybe grab a PAYG SIM from another network and pop it in and see if that works.
