Planet Earth

Wife bought me the Attenborough boxset called LIFE at christmas which cost about £129 with 9 of his series on it.
No doubt I'll be ordeing this too.

Hope they re-broadcast it when the BBC launches it's HD channels. It was amazing quality even in SD, can't wait for the next episode, should have my new telly by then.

Did anybody see tonight's episode? Some of the shots were awesome. I like the giant mound of poo...
Yep, the people working on that are incredible and it must have been such an amazing experience. (working in the clean caves that is lol). Amazing programme.

The underground river where the fresh water hits salt water and it looks like they are floating on air was amazing.

The whole filming under water underground was incredible. The first time they show an underwater scene it doesnt look like its underwater until you see a couple divers flying threw the "air" because the water is so still and clear. Amazing.

Programmes like this are viable products to be sold around the world thereby making the producers and the BBC millions. So why do we still need to pay the license fee?

Planet Earth is such an amazing series I would happily pay 10x the current license fee to watch it.
As a small time wildlife photographer I fully appreciate the effort, skill and patience required to capture these amazing pictures.

The cinemaphotography is simply stunning !!

"That is one big pile of ****" :p

shamelessly stolen from jurassic park

The making of part is an excellent part of the program, it really shows how long and how much trouble they go to to get the footage.

Whilst I agree that Planet Earth is stunning (although last night was boring) I doubt you would be happy to pay £1200 pa to watch it. :p

Why do you think last nights was boring ? I thought it was one of the better ones, the camera work was probably the best I have ever seen on any TV show.

And as I have said in many other threads, I cant really see how people can moan about a small BBC licence fee (and it is small compared to all the other inflated bills we pay for these days) for top quality shows like this when they are more than happy to pay £400+ a year for the advert laden tat thats on Sky.

I wouldn't have said it if I didn't mean it !! :)

SKY+ is worth it for the simplicity in itself, plus if youve a spare hdd lying around defo worth the upgrade, swapped mine from the std 40gb to a 160gb easy as pie :D

But why pay for Sky plus...when you can get a generic sat box which can pick up any sat - and not just the Astras - hook a basic sky decoder to it using the line-through (with no monthly subscription) and record as much BBC/ITV and 450 Free channels (including BBC and most other UK channels) as you like on a 400 or 500GB drive ?

The Technomate receivers are the best ;)

caught this program halfway through, what gets me is how this time lapse photography stuff works though, they would be panning past a tree or something and you would see the plant growing, how is this possible? I can get it when the camera is stationary, but movement in the camera??

It's a motion-control camera. Seen the new Wallace and Gromit movie? Loads of camera movement in that; it's on a computer-controlled rig that moves the camera the same amount along a track/wire for each frame shot.

I'm REALLY enjoying Planet Earth. As someone who wants to get into visual effects, editing and film-making in general, I also really enjoy the last 10 minutes "diary" feature, showing them using the camera cranes in the Chandelier Ballroom (last night's) and the HD cameras underwater (last week's). It's all fascinating for me, from both a natural and film-making point of view.
