Planing the move to DDR3

Not all bleeding edge adventurous types have a complete lack of sense... they are a minority even among enthusiasts. I know many beleeding edgers who won't bother upgrading to DDR3 for some time unless given it free... there's simply no point.
Sure there is. It's like the guys who build hot rod cars. Not every decision has to be a practical pragmatic one. I am not making a blanket statement that says EVERY hardcore OCer or benchmark junkie has already bought DDR3. But, many of these people are the same that are always buying the newest technology when it comes out. Their decision is not based on costs or bang per buck.

Currently in the 3DMark06 records for example, last I looked the top 2 spots are held buy guys with DDR3 Intel chipset ATI graphics systems. DDR2 simply can't keep up right now. And, in about 2 weeks when Nvidia lifts the embargo on 790i, an Intel CPU Nvidia chipset DDR3 SLI rig will probably rocket past 34k on 3DMark06.

I know there are people like that... i'm saying that the uptake of DDR3 is not like the uptake of a new GPU... it's something that is a high cost, almost zero performance upgrade. Not many bleeding edgers will take it up yet, even among the bleeding edgers.

I never said it was. And, that is logical for more than 1 reason. Among other things, a GPU upgrade is not going to necessitate a platform or MOBO change like the move to DDR3 would.

Whichever way you like, the fact is DDR3 is currently the weakest reason to upgrade of any in recent memory... bleeding edge or not. 4GB of high-speed DDR for £70 or 4GB of slightly higher-speed DDR3 for £258... hmm let me think...

well ive decided on ddr3. im building a new rig. seems pointless building another ddr2 rig when a top end ddr3 board is no more expensive to a top end ddr2 board.... £120 for 2gb of ddr3 ram is hardly breaking the bank either! i'll stick with the cheap ocz ram til the prices drop on the decent ram. after all, i paid £150 for 2gb of geil ram over a year ago, and now it costs under £40. (dont even get me started on the 8800gtx i bought for £520 when it came out.)

lol... spin it whichever way you like, the fact is DDR3 is currently the weakest reason to upgrade of any in recent memory... bleeding edge or not. 4GB of high-speed DDR for £70 or 4GB of slightly higher-speed DDR3 for £258... hmm let me think...
I'm not spinning anything and I am not sure what point you are trying to make

Here is my first post again:
DDR2 was out long before it got uptook well, at 400mhz and then 533mhz.
Good point. This entire discussion is exactly like what went on at the front end of DDR2. However, AMD was very strong at the time and did not immediately migrate to DDR2 so, DDR1 had a good bit of life left in it. DDR1 still sells fairly well.

Currently, Intel is MUCH stronger than AMD and Intel is moving to to DDR3. So, it's entirely possible that DDR3 adoption will take place more quickly than DDR2 due to the popularity of the platforms that use it.

Also, people in many cases make their arguments against a new technology based on some incorrect assumptions. They forget that not everyone upgrades for the same reasons. Your bleeding edge adventurous types are already all over DDR3. They are admittedly a minority but, they also do not use the same criteria when selecting the parts they will upgrade to.

The fundamental points I made are:
1. The industry has already been thru this before with the move from DDR1 to DDR2. People made the same arguments against DDR2 then.
2. It's "possible" that DDR3 could be adopted faster than DDR2 due to the popularity of the new platforms that are using it.
3. Not all buyers use the same decision making criteria when buying computer parts.

I'm sure what part of that you call spin. But it does appear that I am looking at a different segment of users than you are. I have not said you are wrong about anything you posted and I agreed with you here:

So, other than the fact that you currently appear to have no need or desire for DDR3 and that you don't like the cost/performance ratio, I guess I am still missing the point or points you are trying to make. No one can say how fast it will occur but DDR3 will be the memory of choice at some point.

waste of money. the performance difference is noexistant and for that £120 you could get 4gb of ddr2. ive no problem if you want to throw money away though:)

The price of DDR3 isn't particularly bad, it is the fantastic price of DDR2 that is effectively making DDR3 look quite expensive. Now, if I recall back around 8 months ago, if I remember correctly, memory such as the Crucial Tenth Anniversary and Cellshock were around the £220 mark for 2GB of RAM.

Moving on though……

I think the question people have to ask themselves that are contemplating on weather to make the move to a DDR3 platform or weather to stick with DDR2 or not is, would I be able to play games and do tasks using a DDR2 system at an acceptable manner? The answer to that is of course, absolutely. Gosh DDR2 isn't that old. :p

The only reason to move to DDR3 is because DDR2 memory is holding your system back slightly and the performance boost from moving to DDR2 to DDR3 will be significant, which at the moment it isn't and by the time this starts to happen, their will be much better DDR3 memory kits out as well as being slightly cheaper.

There is absoutly no reason to move to DDR3 at this stage in my opinion. Could someone please give me a vaible reason to move to a DDR3 system please? :)

Not all users are even using DDR2 yet. So, a person buying right now may want to use for example 790i, triple SLI, etc etc. That means DDR3. This is a TINY percentage of users out there but, it is one scenario I do see.

Others simply have WAY more money than you and I apparently do and want the absolute fastest memory on the planet and will OC it as much as possible. Others want the memory just like they want a shiny new Porsche in the driveway even though they never drive over 88kph.

Keep in mind at one point that 2 x 512mb of DDR500 was well over $400 US. This is all part of a cycle that will likely continue forever.

Hello Yellowbeard, I can completely understand that and if someone wants to have the best of the best all the time and I doubt very much that a few people are going to change their mind.

Now, I don't particularly appreciate the comment above. I'm sure you do have more money than an 18 year old guy who goes to college and has a part time job. Though there wasn't really any reason to say that in a kind of rude manner that you did. Now I apologise if you didn't mean it in that way but that's the way it came across. :)

Money isn't always a factor... I have enough to buy a lot of DDR3... but thankfully i've been blessed with the common sense not to ***** it on anything I deem worthwhile. I'm sure many are the same. :)

I lost my last job due to a severe neck injury and my personal debts as a result are still in excess of $100,000. I was not intending to be rude to you.

Hello Yellowbeard, in that case, I do apologize. I am also sorry to hear about the injury that you had and lost your job because of it. I do hope everything gets better for you. :)

hehe....

i lost my last job cause i developed carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists. (it was nice of them to give me a pay off, as im pretty sure playing project reality every night was actually the cause.... :p)

had to order the P5E3 deluxe elsewhere as i wanted the wifi edition...

You also do not need run DDR3 at 1:1 with your FSb, I see little point in running says a 2000FSB with your Memory at same 2000mhz apart from a few benches.

Its been shown Corsairs DDR3 running upto 1600mhz can run real tight Timmings, better tyhan some DDR2.

I would then run the FSB at 2000mhz and the Memory at 1000mhz with real tight Timings.

Some hit 2400FSB so thats 1200mhz Memory needed.

no point of moving to ddr3 till nahelm is released who requires it but if you extreme bencher and have loads of cash go for it
