BBC News said:
Communications companies are being asked to record all internet contacts between people to modernise police surveillance tactics in the UK.
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith stepped back from a single database - but wants companies to hold and organise the information for the security services.

The new system would track all e-mails, phone calls and internet use, including visits to social network sites.

Ministers say police and the security services need new tools to fight crime.

I for one am getting sick of all this big brother stuff.

don't moan and whinge on the internet do something about it we live in a democracy afterall. Write to your MP telling them your feelings on the matter and request there stance if the two don't match explian you will not be voting for them come the general election. Don't know who your MP is (Shame on you) click below for everything including an address!

While I do not agree with what is being done its not as bad as that quote suggests.

They intend to monitor who is communicating with who, not the content of such communications.

their intentions are never just that, they will end up checking out what everybody is saying to eachother. They just bring things out in smll stages to test the water.

I mean look at what they did with the whole "spy on the people puting their bins out early" thing.

I think that even monitoring this a dangerous game. There have been plenty of terror suspects who are suspects merely through contact with someone deemed 'dodgy'. I think that once you start going down this route its hard to undo the damage.

I still dont understand why this seems to be the number one thing she is worried about. The number of people in the UK that die every year in terror related attacks pales in comparison to nearly every other cause of death. Even the really silly ones like sleep walking. Maybe some of the money from this should go to something worthwhile.

I genuinely dispise jacqui smith. I might actually dislike her more than I do Gordon Brown. She exemplifies everything I hate about the UK.

bet you wouldnt be saying that if they opened all of your real mail and made note of who sent you what and when.

its a joke its not like all crime even happens or is planned on the internet there is no need to monitor your average person.

there is no need to monitor your average person.

We are suposed to be inocent until proven guilty, spying on everyone is the exact oposite. I have no problem with this monitoring if it is only put in place when someone is under suspicion and with a judges agreement.

Seems a bit of a pointless task to be honest.
To fully monitor a persons internet use you'd probably need one or more people.

what happens with the motoring database thing there was talk of a few years ago where they were going to track where every car had been through cameras?

wasnt there also something about tracking cars using GPS a while ago? that might have just been from a think tank though

I imagine that would have to be one heck of a system!! (feel free to tell me otherwise as my internet knowledge is pants) Monitoring the whole of the UK internet?, they can barely organize broadband coverage across the country never mind checking all the information!!!

Nevertheless I am not impressed they are even considering this, yet another erosion of our right to a little privacy!! Talk about a waste of time and money and as was said before there are more threatening/dangerous targets than terrorism!!!

And the funny thing is for the money spent on it the government could probably lay fibre to every house in the UK for super fast broadband...
