Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Another excellent result Indigo.

Thought I'd post on here, attended the race for life yesterday and there were just over 3000 runners. My nine year old son ran it with my wife (no men over 12 allowed) and he came second overall!! His time was around 23 minutes (beating my wife by a couple of minutes :p )

Cheers :)

And cracking result by your son as well. 23 minutes is quick for a nine year old!!! Does he run with you at all?

Not yet, but I think he will be very soon. Worryingly, he'll be faster than me before too long too!

Planning some 400m intervals at lunch today - and its hot out there...

Whats your next target PB Indigo? - your making awesome progress, keep it going!

Cheers

If he keeps it up I've no doubt that he'll do well in junior races as he gets older, cracking time for someone so young. Just be careful he doesn't lose interest or suffer a bad injury. :)

And thanks again, I'm hoping to PB every distance I race this year up to marathon distance.

Did a mile race this evening (Manchester Mile, quite historic and it's been off the calender for many years until this evening) in 5:32 so that's a PB having never raced that distance before. :)

The distances left to PB now are 10 mile / Half Marathon / Full Marathon.

10 mile (Stockport 10) I've never raced before so that's a given.

Half Marathon is currently 1:38:23 and I'm aiming for sub 1:32 (English Half Marathon Warrington) at my next one.

Full Marathon is currently 3:56:?? and I'm aiming at least sub 3:30 (Amsterdam) but I do have another target in mind that I want to keep to myself though for now. ;)

Been running 3 years now and it's only in these last 6 months I've managed to build up some decent consistency but as you can see it's really starting to pay off and I'm loving every minute of it. :D Just need to up it a little more now in distance and add speed work and the rest should take care of itself.

Any aims for yourself this year, how's your running?

5:32 - nice mile :) looks like you are really improving

my aims this year - although my PBs seem harder and harder to get :(

sub 19 for 5k, and sub 40 for 10k

marathon in October - 1st one - so happy to get round - so hopefully sub 4 hours

If you do the training and the long runs then you'll smash 4 hours to be honest. My PB is 3:56:?? (think it's 38 seconds) and that was when my 10K PB was still 46:07 last year.

What are you PB's for 5K and 10K at the moment?

5k - 19:14 I think, and 10k 40:15

my latest half was 1:29:15

but those few seconds get harder and harder -especially 5k - I was within 2 seconds 4 weeks in a row (park-run) - currently dropped back to something like 19:45 or so

I was running 3 times a week (2 club runs/sessions + park-run or run on own) - and 4 gym sessions, and 2 swims a week

cut out the gym and swims, due to moving house etc but kept up running - and I put 7kg on over 3 months - oops - noticing that extra weight atm - so back to gym and swimming

just finding time for everything really

I find gym boring compared to running now

A little, but the main problem was that they were a bit too tight around the sides of the front, if that makes sense, just behind the toes. Swapped them for some Mizuno shoes (trainers?) and went for a size above and they're nice enough now.

I seem to get major shin splints when running around a local park, the ground is softer than concrete and there are some uneven bits but it's not that bad really. If I go anywhere near treadmill speed I can't run for more than 60 seconds before I get really bad pain. I slowed it down on the last run and the only way I could prevent shin splints was to run at an unnaturally slow pace, it felt odd.

Strangely (or not??) I get zero shin splints on the treadmill and can run much faster than on ground. Tempted to stick with this to build up fitness - wise move? Ran 30 mins of 60 second run 90 walk (first week of couch to 5k) and was up to ~7km/h on the last few stints with zero splints. Hardly fast pace but 10000000000000 times faster than ground running.

A treadmill is far more forgiving than running outside. As you seem to have just started I'd say your legs are just adjusting to running outside rather than shin splints per se. Put the treadmill on a few degrees incline and see how the shins feel.

Im curious what i decent time for a 5k is? I've got it in my head to aim for sub 18 minutes but no idea if thats realistic for the average person. Only get out running a couple times a week, doing 12min 3k at the minute so a fair bit of work to do!

sub 18 mins is top-tier of a running club - prob only top 20 in our club out of 400 odd can run sub 18. Mid 17s I'd say is county level runner if not better

I'm at low 19s and for park-runs - thats top 2%

Where are you from and what is county level?

Edit: Is county as in inter counties level do you mean? Sorry to seem dumb we have totally different words/organisation of things here for effectively the same thing/idea.

A fair bit of work to do indeed. 18 mins would be a pretty good effort requiring a pretty structured training plan, with 4-5 sessions a week. Just my informed opinion of course.

Time to be more realistic then! Sub 20 can be the aim.

Yea unlikely to happen, will be happen with a sub 20 for now until i can put more time in. Just did a low 16 4k so hopefully it isnt too far away!

Hi all! I am looking at purchasing a gps watch for running but I am after a few opinions. The main three I have been looking at are the Nike sportwatch, the TomTom Runner and the Garmin 15. Does anybody use any of these or can you advise on a similar priced watch?

my 310xt has been absolutely superb, does everything a runner needs, and has great battery life and accuracy as long as you don't mind a bit of bulk

about 130 with HR online

Recently started running in the evenings. Some of the 5k pbs are a little daunting, mine is currently around the 25 minute mark, with my one and only 10k at 63 minutes.

I did my first 5k in.. well forever. Managed to do it in 35.54 I am going to do another 5k on Wednesday to try and shave a few mins off that then I have a proper run on Saturday.

Don't be disheartened. Some of the PB's will have been from running for quite a long time and quite possibly people having come from other sports possibly and therefore already having some base fitness to start with.

You only have to beat yourself as well remember, it's not about beating everyone else. Although my PB is fairly good it's no where near someone like Mo Farah for example but I don't beat myself up about it.

If you need any advice just ask and I'm sure you'll improve soon enough with consistent running and more experience. Enjoy it and don't worry about others. :)
