Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

In fact preparation couldn't be worse, the week before the race I'm away on site for an ERP go live and will be working weird hours and flying back late.

Hey guys looking for some advice, had a pretty bad time a few months ago with insane shin splints so it scared me from running for a while in fear of repeating pain :D but lately I'm trying to get back into it and easing myself in with 2/3k runs on the tread mill.

I'm starting to get a pretty nasty twinge in the back of my left thigh, any advice? I've learnt my lesson from the last time and I have properly fitted trainers etc so I'm pretty sure footwear isn't a cause!

Sorry to hear that man, join me in Manchester in April! :D

What watches do people use? Been looking at getting a Garmin Forerunner, either 10 or 15. Can get them on finance on wiggle. Anyone got any recommendations? Cheers!

On the Garmin front, I'd start with a cuppa, biscuit and reading DCRainmaker's reviews. Very much in-depth but superb for understanding what it does and then you can decide if it fits your needs. He also does good reviews of other brands like Polar and Suunto. You can also build your own comparison tables here

Just signed up to do a leg of a Marathon relay! 5.75 miles mainly flat running.

I'm in fairly decent shape but I don't do any dedicated running yet, lots of cycling, circuit training and 5-a-side.

Got until October to be ready for it, plenty of time!

Signed up again for a leg of a marathon, this time around I'm doing a 7 mile leg. Coming in a good half stone lighter than last year and I've been doing a little more running than I did last year - hopefully it goes better than last year!

Look, you've never done anything that you have said you have done or are going to do, so why start now? Though I guess the fact that you actually seem to have entered this one is progress.

Where did you find those so cheap? Looking for some off-road shoes myself.

sportsshoes.com
It was clearance sale though as there were only a few sizes left (the one time where needing size 11.5 trainers comes in handy!) when I bought mine, none left now.
Although they did have other good shoes on sale, might be worth having a look at what they still have. They have regular discount codes as well so I got mine with an extra 15% off!

I should probably look for some new shoes as well. Been using a pair of cheap Karrimor shoes that have served me very well to be fair, but four pairs of laces, a lot of soaking runs and a screw puncturing the sole of one of them later they might be reaching their end.

Set a new PB of 2:06:36 at the Cardiff Half today! Well chuffed as I knocked off 20 minutes from last years time.

Now to get in under 2hrs - and time to research GPS watches.

Anyone else do the Cardiff Half today?

I'm not keen on travelling such a long way for a race, it's just too expensive. I am debating doing the Kent Roadrunner marathon, even though it's not an especially inspiring course, it is only 20 miles from my house, so I can just drive there.

Have finally built up some stamina - I can run for 20 mins non-stop :D (22 mins to be precise)

Sounds ridiculous to be happy about something as insignificant as that but it's the fittest I've ever been!

Still working out my pacing and I found I had a lot left in the tank after today's run on the treadmill but I'm just building it up, getting used to going for longer and longer each time. The rewards come so much quicker than lifting weights.

Having started running in Jan this year in a bid to improve my fitness a bit I finished my 1st half marathon yesterday. I came in at 1:56:14 which I am pretty pleased with for a first stab at it. I feel I probably had more left in the tank too but held myself back at the beginning for fear of running out of steam later on (finished with a 6 minute final mile).

Next week is a 10k for charity and a bit of light relief before another 1/2 in early October.

I think I might have the bug...

Just finished the Great Scottish Run today and I totally smashed it (for me anyway). Training has been a bit on the light side for the last few weeks for one reason or another and I would have been happy with anything under 2 hours but I came in with 1:46:08 which I am well happy with!!

I am going to be sore tomorrow mind ;)

Well done rhysduck and Salsa on the half marathons and Sigma for keeping it up and sticking to it and seeing your own personal improvement in time and distance. Always good to see others do well and getting the bug.

And Sigma, running is running to me and it doesn't matter how quick or how far you run. You only have to better yourself and that is an achievement enough. :)

Thanks IG. And super well done to Salsa... that's some serious hard work to get 2 Sub 2hr Half's on your first go.

I ran an extra 40 miles this year training compared to last year and it definitely helped. Still didn't do anywhere near enough training though (~103miles all year).

Gonna sign up for the Swansea & Cardiff half next year to get a bit faster. I HAVE to break 2hours damn it :D
