Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

For a lot of the long walks I was doing a few years back, 15-20miles/day over 3-4 days at a time, I was wearing my Brooks Cascadia 8's. Really comfy as they suited my feet. Best off trying a few pairs in a shop if you can. For me, I usually find that the Salomans are a tad on the narrow side, especially for my wide feet

Cheers mate, do you think something like the Saloman is a bit to rugged for mainly pavement/city walking?

Reading reviews, a few complain that the 'Tread' disappears quickly when running on pavements.

I don't know about the speedcross, if they're the ones I think then the tread on them may be a bit more designed for off-road. I did have a pair of the Saloman Ultra 2 GTX shoes - http://www.salomon.com/uk/product/x-ultra-2-gtx.html

They were comfy and I used those for walking/travelling too. Wore well but ideally you still need to try a pair on to see whether they're any good for your feet.

Just completed a great week of running, setting a new weekly PB of 94.5miles. Was planning a high volume week nestled between 2 lower volume weeks. Ive been finding it hard to do good quality works outs (intervals, lactate threshold) due to the heat so thought I would do extra volume.

The week looked like this:
  • Monday: 16.2m at about 8:19 pace. Hot but bearable, just try to set a solid base for a week of high volume.
  • Tuesday. 2250yard swim in my fastest ever time. 8.2mile easy run after swim at 8:21 pace, hot due to the later start after swimming but feeling strong.
  • Wednesday: Was planning another 16miler but an overnight thunderstorm made the morning much cooler than recently (about 25*C at 6am) so I had to make use of the rare summer opportunity. 2 mile warm up, 8x800m on a ash track with 400m recoveries. Splits were around 3:03 to 3:09, fastest yet. I still wanted the volume so I continued with 6 miles easy. Total, 14 miles at about 7:40 average but 6:30 for the intervals and 8:30 for the rest
  • Thursday, pool closed so I ran more. Normally i take it a little easier the day before a long run but I wanted pre-fatigued legs for the Friday suffering. 11.2 miles at 8:16 pace. Still enjoying the cooler morning lead to slightly faster splits despite tired legs form the hard intervals
  • Friday: 21.2 miles. Went smoothly, humidity was exceptional but temperatures moderate which made it not too bad but very wet and some chaffing. My super short running shorts that are more like underwear really but i fear someone might call the police on me they look so ridiculous! This run was mostly mental, ignoring the legs and just getting in the miles. Ran as a slight progression form 9:00 pace down to 7:40. 8:16 average pace, HR well under control
  • Got up saturday with little sleep but pulled 10.5 miles. Pace all over the place, started slow at around 9:00 a mile, sped up to 8:00 when legs felt great, but then hit some hilly trails and did some 10:00 miles. last mile felt better than the first, and that is always a good sign. 8:38 pace.
  • Sunday. Knew today was the day to hit my first 90 mile week, needing around 8.7. At the start that seemed like all I would do but after a few miles my legs agin really loosened up and the whole thing turned in to an amazing run. Legs felt weightless, running effortless. I was just floating without feeling anything in my legs. My pace increased, my heart rate dropped, my form got better, I powered up steep hills. Got to 12.3 miles back home but thought i would turn it into a half marathon so did a few hill repeats outside the house.

Feeling strong as an Ox now. An easier week last week (72miles) and for the week coming should help solidify this weeks training. More cross-training to come in the next days as I let my running muscles complete their necessary repairs and adaptions.

Hey guys, just starting to get into running to help with cutting/shredding/whatever-you-wanna-call-it ...

However I really wanna listen to music whilst I run to motivate me or I get a bit bored and unfocused. However the problem is finding an armband to hold my phone that fits my arms, had a look on eBay and lots only go 13-15" but my arms are 19", so its not as if i could just squeeze it on either.

Can anyone recommend a product? Phone is iPhone 6. Thanks!

I don't run with a phone, but my wife does and has one of these

Check the size to make sure it'll fit your phone.

That looks pretty cool.

I was going to say, i got an arm holder for my phone and used it a couple of times before chucking it out. Not easy to put on at all, and really quite uncomfortable when running. Tend to slip up and down, constrict blood flow, chaffing, would wobble about. Just putting the phone in my pocket was much better.

however, I do often run with a hydration belt and put my phone in there. being close to my center of mass there is no bouncing, wobbling, shaking or additional momentum of swinging arms etc.

think I will order one of these running buddies to try out.

Can anyone recommend a good store for buying running shoes in London, preferably with gait analysis? I have a fair degree of supination in both feet and feel a properly fitted pair of trainers would help with my running.

Cheers.

Would anyone like a place in the Bournemouth marathon in October? I'm going to have to pull out, but I can transfer my place if anyone is interested. You would have to pay a £15 fee to make the transfer, but it's much cheaper than the £50 entry fee. Contact me via Trust if you're interested :)

It's gone so quite in here...hope that means everyone is training like crazy!

Been a good few weeks for me clocking in around 40 miles a week. Week before was a recovery week with only 33 miles, this week I missed a session for my brothers wedding but still had 38 including a long run of 1hr45 with last 20 mins at above race pace. Felt tired when it came time for that but still managed to bring the speed up and keep it.

Really enjoying getting into a proper schedule again, slightly different this time out with 5 sessions including 2 key work outs (4 with 1 last time). Today was 12 fartlek repeats, really love fartlek. Thursday will then be tempo intervals or 4 x 2 mile with 4 min recovery.

Finding my pace is improving nicely and for the most part my heart rate is coming down, really notice the difference on days when its been cooler.

All is going well here, just on vacation so not much time online. The cooker weather here in Germany has dropped my pace by 30second a mile at least at equal heart rate. I've been doing some ridiculous runs here, last Wednesday I do 2 miles at 8min/mile then 6mikes progressive tempo from 6:45 dropping to 6:15 pace, followed by 4 easy and then 1.1 at MP, completing a half marathon in around 1:32, 6:59 pace - and it felt easy.

Tried a LR Friday with 8miles easy then dropped to marathon pace at 6:55 and was good for 7 miles, then got a killer.side stich and had to walk home. Next day my legs felt fresh.as flower so churned out another 16 miles at 7:35pace.

It is just insane how cool 25C with low humidity feels and what that does to my running. With this kind of weather I feel like I could go sub 3hour for my marathon. 7:40 pace miles feel like my usual long slow pace.

There is also much less vertical here per a run (200-500ft), and lovley bike paths next to the road to run down for miles at a time. Will be disappointed when I get back home and loose 30-40seconds a mile!

Bonjour: That looks pretty intense, good luck!

DP: That's some real good times, temperature really makes a massive difference. Last week we had a day around 18c and it was fantastic. I've an 1hr-1hr10 easy run tonight, it's currently about 30c outside (car was reading 33c) so not overly looking forward to it, but at least I can go into the hills and woods for some shade.

It's been a month since I did the Ironman and 2 weeks since London Triathlon. My training has sort of dropped off. I've lost my motivation to go out for runs and rides. Probably because I've been doing it religiously for the last 12 months training for the Ironman!

That said, I'm still trying to do one run commute per week and I've got my eye on a Winter duathlon in November.

Well done mate. :)

Shade is your friend, go topless, and just ignore pace and just run real easy. Your heart rate will begin increasing rapidly at normal easy pace so you will have to try and slow down further.

The good news is that running in the heat gives you similar advantages to altitude training by increasing red blood cell count.

After my first Marathon mentally i was totally beat for about 4 weeks, tried to get back into training but then got sick so didn't really do much for around 7 weeks. It sucked for the first weeks as it was evident how much fitness I had lost but it comes back much faster the second time round.

After Marathon #2 I was pretty motivated straight away but had to force myself not to do much for a couple of weeks.

I've entered the London Marathon ballot. I'm keen to see what I can do in a marathon without a swim and cycle before it!

You can do it! Just enter one and you have no choice but to train. :)

If you did around 3:43 in your 1st Ironman I would say you are probably at 3:20-27 speed in an open marathon.
