Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Just seen this as one of the pictures from 2019. I am definitely falling over and dying.

Also need to buy trail shoes and a rucksack.

Do it! Everyone I've met at Parkrun has been super friendly and supportive! It's a great atmosphere and there's really no pressure.

Can you take someone with you?

I've arranged to meet my sister tomorrow morning so I can give it a go. She lives like 10 minutes walk away so it's ideal. She would have run with me if she wasn't getting ready to run a marathon on Sunday.

Go for it, nothing to be worried about at all apart from it being a new expierance. Really friendly runs. Just do not get demoralised when a 12 year old constantly beats you :) Not that its a race.

Aha, I hope it doesn't urge me to try run faster and then tire myself out before I even finish lap 1.

@Spacedeck, would this be your first go at running in an organised fashion? You'll find it really motivates you as you see people in the distance and will naturally push yourself to try and catch up with them.

It will be indeed. Even though I've run for a while, I've never run with a large group. I think my park has on average 475 participants weekly. I've run the course before on my own, with my sister and partner but never officially.

Get your barcode printed and go for it :) Loads of friendly people and a great atmosphere.

Thanks, I'll get them printed tonight, really hope I wake up on time...

So my sister being there helped and she introduced me to a few people. At the start line I stayed next to one of her friends but then went on a head after a short distance. So the actual start is a little scary with the amount of people attending (556 today) but as it starts to spread out it becomes easier. At times I was running within a group and keeping up but on inclines I would start getting a head of them and then move onto the next group. I found that having so many others running around me helped with motivation to just keep running, and trying to keep up with them. This ended up not only giving me a time I'm happy with but a PB for any 5k distance I've ever run.

So results wise I came 122nd out of 556 runners and got a time of 24:36.

As for me. I wanted to try and do a long run and see where I was at with distance from not doing many long runs recently.

Got to a point at around 4.5miles where it’s about 2.5 to get home, but felt good and went a longer way. Annoyingly ended up at 9.8miles rather than pushing on to 10!

Do you use a watch? I have this issue with Strava at the moment sometimes. One route I'd already mapped out for 10k came up short on Strava. I didn't know until the end of the run though as my phone is tucked away in my belt and I don't have a watch. It's pretty annoying when it happens though.

For Strava, I would ensure you have your watch to 1 second recording. I used to find that it would always be short (to the point where i would run an extra 0.1Km every time just in case)

Once i set to 1 sec, it never seems to happen. I think it is because it is possibly taking the last point in the track and this could potentially be a little way back.

Yeah i use a watch, although i've stopped using the Strava app as that never linked to Vitality properly so i now use the Apple Workout app and sync to Strava.

The reason i was short was due to the Ocado delivery guy ringing me to say he was outside when i was at 9.5 miles so i just went home rather than taking a slight detour.

Well cross country running.... how much fun is this not the horrible torture it was at school at all. So glad i took the plunge with a local club to sign up for it, well worth signing it up for it, but it does mean you need to buy some decent shoes for it though.

If you're new to it you may not be the best person to ask but i'm looking to pickup some trainers for the race above.

Have you got any suggestions? I'm usually on the more stability side of neutral without specifically needing a pair of stability trainers. If that makes sense!

I really wouldn't know tbh, i just went to Derby runners annoyed them for 60mins trying pretty much every cross country shoe on that was not spikes and paid up £120 for the pleasure.

Speaking of trainers, my Brooks have started to get holes in the mesh. I'm not sure how long they will last but I hope they will last until I can afford more.

:(

I've taken a punt on the Hoka One One Speedgoat 3's

The 2 Runners Need stores near me seem to have a poor selection of Trail shoes in stock and in very limited sizes, so i just spent a bit of time on the phone with their head office explaining my history of trainers to get some advice.

I like Runners Need as i get 50% off :p

Ahh you went for the bouncy stuff, a sound choice if your doing mountain paths, All my races are on the fields so its just more tread than actual shoe i think :)

Yeah. My ankles are pretty weak so some support will be helpful. Although because the soles are thick it will increase the risk of rolling my ankle I think.

just my my first proper off road run in a long time. The beginning hill was brutal (for me) but is actually similar to the worst part of the race course so good practice.

I tackled it in road shoes. Probably wasn’t a good idea. Also just got back to the car as it was getting pitch black which was lucky as I had no lights.

Last time I ran without a light was when I went up an old railway track locally. I thought "Blimey it's a bit dark" and then realised I was now about 2 miles up the unlit track. Nearly killed myself on the way back and then bought a light the day after!
