Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Left foot is pretty damn sore this morning, right on the ball of the foot, feels excessively bruised. The dog bites are also pretty painful, and after about 4 hours in A&E yesterday asking if i need a tetanus jab i'm close to the point of pursuing an injury claim!

Sounds nasty. Have I missed something in an earlier post? Had no idea you'd been bitten by a dog. Without wanting to tread towards medical advice, I assume you have been prescribed something to treat possible infection, even if not tetanus.

Hope you have a quick recovery.

Ah yeah, seems i missed that part out of my previous post!

There's a house in the middle of nowhere, it's just along a gravel farm track, but i don't think it's actually a farm. I've ran along the trail loads of times and you can always hear dogs barking as they sense someone coming past.

This was around 8 miles into the run, and as i've ran in front of the house it seems the gate was open as the owner was going out. A dog (no idea what it was but upon chatting to someone at the 1st checkpoint he referred to it as "big bear house" on account of the size of the dogs). It charged into my left thigh, and then as i've continued to move it's grabbed my left forearm.
At this point the owner came running out shouting at me not to move as it would've continued to attack. He then came over and grabbed it's collar as it was continuing to try and jump at me. He explained he'd not seen anyone coming and so opened the gate to go out but hadn't tied the dogs up. As the dog was then still trying to get to me and he was struggling to hold it, he told me to go.

I actually hadn't realised my leg was cut and thought it'd just headbutted me, but got home to this.

I had thought my arm was worse as there were phases during the run where my arm was sore, then numb then sore again. Luckily doesn't seem to have been any lasting effects from it. It really shook me up though and affected my head for the remaining 32 miles. Now just got the bruising and aches.
It's a shame as it's a section of path i really like, but i do think i'll be a little hesitant to go along there for a little while.

@div0 Yeah, i've been prescribed some antibiotics which i need to collect today.

That's pretty out of order that the owner knew they would go for someone like that, unless he had tied them up before opening the gate.

Great job with finishing though. That's quite a run!

Yeah, i think it was definitely an oversight by him to open the gate when he did. His response that he didn't see my coming is a bit rubbish as there's a short hill and then a turn so he's unlikely to have seen anyone approaching as you can come from out of sight to in front of the house in less than 10 seconds i would imagine.

Have reported it now, so will see what happens. The officer i spoke to did mention compensation as i mentioned it'd ripped my top/shorts and also for time/money spent at hospital. So might look down that route rather than full blown no-win/no fee!

Dammit, after the run i noticed some tenderness on the ball of my left foot. Went for a post run massage last night (my heath cash plan with work renewed at the end of September and had a chunk of spare cash so got him to pre-bill me :D). He noticed my foot looking a bit flat and said it looked like a dropped metatarsal which would explain the pain and the curl in my toes.

It's weird as i ran yesterday and again today and during the run it feels ok, but today post run it's hurting with every step, so think it definitely needs time to recover. Hopefully it's not a long term issue.

Another annoyance is that my trainers split in the same place on both shoes on Saturday. I'm tempted to send Runners Need a picture as the fact it's in identical places suggests a possible fault. On the plus side i've taken delivery of a pair of Hoka Clifton 8's and Speedgoat 5's :)

Quite impressed with this Coaching system. After each run you get 3 questions on Whatsapp relating to perceived effort, injuries and how you generally felt the run went. I put a 5/10 for the injury yesterday in relation to the run, and the training plan has automatically recalculated to put in a few days rest and i've just had an email from someone asking for further details.

Considering the fairly low cost, the speed of response seems great. I imagine that since the Plan itself seems to be AI driven (based on the coaches beliefs), they're not wasting time typing up the plan in Training Peaks like other coaches and that creates more time for Value added work.

Winning, Runners Need have accepted that the Peregrines have failed and are replacing them under warranty. Now to just decide whether to keep the Speedgoats i'd ordered or return them as i don't really need 2 pairs of similar trail shoes.

It never stopped you before ;-)

I have actually moved some trainers into the shed as they were building up a bit too much inside....

Also decided to make a big change today. Have switched from Miles to KM. Unsure how long it'll take to mentally get my head around it, but this coaching platform always mentions Km and it makes sense to be in sync. It's a change i was always intending making when i got to Spain anyway, so just bringing it forward a bit.

I switched to km this year too! It sounds weird but it feels like a life hack when you're running along as the km segments come up quicker. Downside is a long run feels longer as you now have 21x km instead of 13 miles to a half marathon :D

Getting my head around pacing was the biggest challenge for me though. Having miles per minute engrained in my head I struggled objectively comparing my pace until I made some reference points in my head. For instance, knowing that 7:00 min/mile equates to approx 4:20/km took so long to get used to (for me). On the upside, I've found it better to compare longer run efforts as there's more segments to work with... sort of like a graph with more data points is easier to read.

This year my focus has been on throwing in variety to my work. I used to run every run like it was the same, at the same pace... now I am doing long-slow runs, intervals @ max effort and even progessive/pyramid runs to build fitness. I've set new 5k, 10km and HM PBs this year already and was within 2 min of another HM PB without even trying recently. Annoyingly, on the subject of PBs, I did my first park run a few weeks ago and thought I'd go after my 5K PB.

They adjusted the course layout prior to the event so when I came across the line and saw that my watch registered 0.02km too short I was devastated. Even with the "correct distance" feature on Strava enabled I couldn't get it to count which was annoying as I had gone sub 21 min FML :(

Argh! I had that a few times in the past and it is so annoying when it comes up at 9.98km or something similar. I found that switching the watch to 1 second recording fixed it. Smart recording seems to miss bits out and so the distance can go wrong.

I made it outside for the first time in ages last night. Was trying to be good and did 2km run followed by 1km walk back to the start. Will extend this slowly as long as the knee and other ancient bits hold it together. Not too bad I suppose for my 20th anniversary of registering on these forums post-nuke :-0

@Ian_Eb I think it was you that once posted a website which had an API for Strava to get all of the data with some better compilation details. Do you remember what it was? I've registered for a study on breathing exercises to see how it impacts on a 10 mile run, but since i rarely do a 10 mile flat out effort, i'm trying to find my "best" time from previous runs.

My foot still isn't right, i rested from Tuesday and then ran on Sunday. Stupidly however i did around 90 minutes and my foot started to hurt around the 75 minute mark. Probably should've just done a short run in hindsight. It's an annoying one where it's not too painful to stop me from actually running, so i'm not sure whether i'm safe to keep running on it and just monitor it, and keep icing/massaging it, or whether i'm causing more damage and should just stop completely.

I don't think so, this looks like it could've done it, however restricted to 25 activities and don't fancy paying for just what i'm after on this occasion.

Might see if Garmin has what i want actually.

it syncs faster if you do the archive download first. Strava limit the api calls so it can take a while to do a full sync
