Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Might pickup a pair of compression socks, always handy for the calves

Edit: ordered!

Probably get them before me!
I ordered at 45% discount, then qualified for free standard shipping, through 2 orders (last minute additions!). The discount then went to 50% and when i looked to see how much it'd be, it was ~£15 cheaper and qualified for next day delivery. I held off to save the hassle, but not still not got anything. Presumably due to the RM strikes :(

Also shows how cheap/rubbish some things are. I was advised not to walk barefoot in the house due to my foot problem. Went to order some shoes from Fitville (https://thefitville.uk/), ordered 3 pairs which came to £87. I then decided to order some Hoka Recovery shoes which i knew would be better, so emailed to cancel. They took ages to reply and so they were posted but said to return them when they all turned up. I waited till the last pair arrived and got in touch, heard nothing so opened a ticket with Paypal. About an hour later i got an email offering me a £65 refund to keep all the shoes. I'm still not entirely sure it's worth it!

Got a pair of NB 1080 V12's in the black friday deals. Only £65 which seemed a bargain. Had hoped for some decent deals with Altras but nothing seemed to pop up.

So that's 5 new pairs by my reckoning ;-)

Are you planning on setting up a shop when you move to Spain?

In other news... Based on nothing other than a feeling, I am beginning to think that all this talk of using Turmeric may actually be helping. I still had a few pains in my knee what were putting me off running, but since i started taking some Turmeric capsules it seems to have gone away. Given that we are now so close to the season of mince pies and alcohol though, I may wait until Jan to give it a proper go anyway!

Well, the 3 pairs from Fitville don't count as they're useless, and the Hokas are "recovery" shoes which i'm using as slippers so also don't count :p

For your knees, i don't know if you ever looked into KneesOverToes guy, but i spotted this sled on Ebay based in Congleton. You should get it! It was a shame it was so far away. Likely much better than my tyre!

My foot is still a little dodgy. Hoping to try it on a 10k run at the weekend. In other news, and i don't know why, but i seem to be running faster. My average 4 mile runs have been clocking in around 8:50 pace, rather than the 9:20 pace they used to be. HR is a little higher, but i don't "feel" that i'm running fast which is making it harder to slow down. Maybe using the bike more is having a benefit. Either that or using a Yoga ball combined with a standing desk is improving the core muscles?

In other news, i went off road last night for the first time since last months Ultra with the dog. Was running along thinking how great my head torch was on the canal, but not looking down and kicked a rock and went flying. Got about a 3mm deep gouge in my knee and actually smashed the screen protector on my watch!

Those are my everyday mileage shoes. I like them but I've been getting some rubbing on the inside of the foot with it, over distances longer than 15k.

Ordered the ASICS novablast 3 in the sales to try as an alternative :)

Loving my Nike vaporfly next %2 so much, I'll be bagging some more in the NY sales (hopefully). I may even use them for London Marathon next year as they don't give me any trouble (which is weird because for the longest time I considered Nike to be too narrow compared to other brands).

I have a pair of the older versions. Possibly the V10. Really liked them, but even though i chose the "wide" version of these, they still feel really narrow. Almost bought the Novablast 3's first, but think the website broke and i couldn't be bothered.

EDIT - Annoyingly, NB won't allow exchanges, only return and re-order. Since they're now back to £160 i have no interest in buying them again at full price. I might continue to wear around the house to see if they stretch. The support and feel of them seem good and i did like the old 1080's i had.

Managed 3 runs in 3 days :) Only fairly short, but it's a start. Still some discomfort occasionally, and i'm not sure if i'm running weird but my left ankle has been very stiff. Tuesday i did 5 miles and felt great in the freezing cold of -2C

In other news. @Ian_Eb will be glad to hear i've bought another 2 pairs of trainers. I wanted something heavily cushioned to protect my gammy foot but still have the wide toebox to encourage my feet to get back to normal shape. Picked up the Altra Paradigm 6 and Olympus 5.
Sportshoes had a 20% off they emailed me which tipped me over the edge!

I am now done!

For now... ;-)

I am going to give my knee a last few weeks rest and then pick up in the new year when it starts to get bitterly cold as well

You didn't buy that sled!

Also signed up for the Spain run again, the price jumps up in mid December, and then again mid January. So i figured it was better to sign up now and then get a refund if i cancel (€4 insurance) rather than waiting until i knew for sure i could make it.

With a bit of luck we might actually be over in Spain at that point anyway which would be ace as thinking of going for 3 months around Macrh time.

First trail run today since early October. Absolutely lovely on the snow with blue bright skies.
Also my longest run in over a month at just over 6 miles after 5ish yesterday.
First week of over 20 miles since early October too so hopefully a decent place to build on.

Foot hurts after the run but seems to settle down fairly quick.

Following on from a post i saw in the Cycling forum, how are peoples goals going?

As seen below, mine were off to a flying start, then hit slumps in the immediate aftermath of certain events, and then dropped off a cliff in October when i got injured. Still a record year for mileage though so can't be too annoyed. The elevation one is probably more annoying as i was absolutely smashing that for ages but then spent far too many runs just on the roads and not getting into the hills. Still ~11000ft/mth is a fairly decent acheivement on average :)

There is a good saucony sale on over at sports shoes, speed 3 sub £100, pro 3 £125, shift 3 and triumph 20 also discounted.

I picked up the xodus ultra runshield for myself.

Oh and discount codes work as well if you happen to have one.

I don't want to alarm anyone, but I think I may be part vampire!

This summer has been the first time I've run in warm, sunny weather and it was absolute misery. It got so bad, I would be reduced to a walk (similar feeling to bonking) within a few miles and that was on runs at 10+min/mi. The heat was a big factor but it was when I was out in direct sunlight that really did me in. It could be 15℃ but I would be done in if the sun had any power to it. These past few weeks have been amazing, I did a 51 mile week not long ago and a steady 20 miler this Tuesday with zero water and a couple of gels. I even felt good enough to do the last 4 miles at around 8min/mi (HM PB pace 7:28/mi). Proper dreading the warmer weather!

I entered the Wildest Peaks race in January and was really looking forward to a shortish, cool race to get me going again. That has now been cancelled though. Struggling to find something else to enter.

Anyone doing a Christmas day Parkrun? Thinking about doing Saturday and Sunday.

So how far has everyone managed to run this year?

I've only clocked up 440km all year, but 2022 saw a return to running for me after a complete break in 2020 - 2021 due to injury.

Hoping to join another half in 2023, so hopefully an increase in my mileage to come :)
