Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Managed my first 10k run today in 42minutes, the route had a few cheeky inclines in aswell. Quite proud of myself for that as i'm only gonna improve on that time from now on! Aiming for 40 mins next time :)

Does anyone see a disparity in time between 5k park and 5k treadmill?

Obviously dependent on the terrain, but I go significantly faster on a treadmill.

I'm the other way round. I'm consistently about 30 seconds less per mile when running outside than on a treadmill. I think it's a combination of overheating indoors, the psychological effect of having to set the speed myself and using a random incline setting on the treadmill. You don't get many hills doing outside running in Cambridge.

was efforts session tonight with running club

something like 14 lots of 650m effort with jogs for 50m in between

finally managed to get my pace down to around 6 min miles for the efforts :)

Did my first half-marathon on Sunday in Blackpool in 1.38.23

Well chuffed with the result and loved it as a race distance.

That's 5k, 10k, half-marathon and marathon distance complete now.

I've already done two marathons before Sunday (odd maybe I know) but first marathon was Windermere in 2011 in 4.40.44 followed by Lancaster 2012 (made Windermere look flat at times!!!) in 4.13.00.

My half split for Lancaster was around 2hrs so I'm happy with how training is coming along and don't think it's unreasonable to aim for 3.45.00 when I run the London Marathon this year.

nice time :) (almost exactly same time as my 1 and only half marathon end of last year)

Essex 20 this weekend :( not really looking forward to it - but looking forward to completing it - my longest training run was just over 19 miles so my legs should have enough energy in them hopefully

I've been running 3-4 times a week, swimming 3 times a week,and gym 4 times a week - so my body should be fit enough - I hope !

you will be thankful when you hit a big hill in a race and everyone starts to flag and you can power up it as you've been running up them in training for months lol.

Its the same for me, damn hilly surrey :D

I love hills, nothing better than gritting your teeth, shortening my stride, increasing cadence and feeling the burn. :D

Yeah you're both right.... My favourite parts of hills is when you just about reach the crest and the hill flattens out. For me, I get this strange floaty feeling in my legs as the "strain" (for want of a better word) is eased right off :D

My 1/2 Marathon run round here has nearly 1100ft of climb in it... Even my 5K has upto about 320ft of climb dependant on the route... Basically 80-100ft of climb/mile wherever I go :o

A lot of peoples times in here make me feel ill ;). I have zero chance of ever being able to do halfs or even 10k in the times you chaps are doing. A bit jealous to be honest.

Is that for charity, or purely for comfort? ;)

For Cancer Research UK ;)

Would have made my £300 target anyway, but I thought if I had a forfeit if I hit my target, it might happen a bit quicker.

I'm now at £271, which I'm pretty pleased with!

I'll post some photos when I'm done.

Another small 6k run / 20k bike pain free for me today. Knee really starting to feel stronger each run as well but not sure its ready for a big push. Plan to increase by 1k each week till my usual 10k isn't a problem then work on getting the pace back up as its dropped at least 10%.

:) sounds like you're getting there LOAM :)

"Essex 20" for me this morning, would like to say it was easy but the last 3 miles were very tough. Course was undulating or "hilly" dependant on who you talked to :) 3 laps.

Managed a time of 2hrs 37'38 - which was faster than I expected

feel like I have a bad hangover now though

Yeah slowly though, I reckon it will be 3 months before its sorted. All my own fault though. I'm new to running and just ran without doing any of the support work on muscles that I clearly need.

Do you have a strava or the like for that?
