Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Yeah. Moved over in October. We’ve just bought land in a nearby town to build so no sign of ever wanting to leave.
Yesterdays trails were probably a 5 minute drive which is a big factor in picking the area. Just the ability to get to those views from my front door rather than driving to the Lakes like I used to is amazing.
So training camp at yours when…?

Funnily enough I keep joking with the wife that we should add some accommodation aimed at runners/cyclists.

Got a 40,000m2 plot with stunning views and brilliant trails/roads for both sports. I’m building a gym on site and throw a hot tub in and we have a winner!
I've discussed doing just that, and at great length, with a long time running partner of mine. One of those life dreams that'll never happen cause I've had kids :p.

Hey there! I was wondering if you could help me out with something. I am currently on week 7 of Hal's novice marathon plan (aiming for 5-5:3 hours) and my long run is ramping up to 12 miles this week. I want to make sure I am properly hydrated throughout my training and was hoping you could give me some advice on how much plain water and electrolyte fluid I should be drinking. I have a 500ml bottle and a 1.5L Camelback, but I'm not sure if that's too much or too little. I'm aiming to use this 12-mile as a practice run. Any thoughts?

My statistics if that helps.
Male
36 Years Old
67Kg
5'10''
12-13 miles probably take 2:15 - 2:30hours.
Unavailable :p
Only real advice I'd give you is ditch the camelback and switch to soft flasks, if you can carry 1.5L in a camel back you can carry 2 (or even 3) 500ml soft flasks.

That aside, 2 litres for 12 miles seems an awful lot to me, I'd consume no more than a litre and only then in hot weather, this time of year 500ml max, but everyone is different and you do what is comfortale for you.

I have definitely got buyers remorse from the Fenix 7S Pro. I navigated this last week, and some parts where a struggle:

It's a great watch and I do like the battery life but some of the trickier parts of navigation were a struggle on the smaller screen. Might hit up a few of the local running clubs and see if I can swap it for the larger screen.

What did you have before? I had the 6X Pro and loved it and whilst I’ve moved to the Epix Pro 51mm I don’t question the upgrade cost vs what I got. I think the 7X would’ve been better.

I had a nightmare today. There’s a local hill (Calpe Ifach) a 300m high rock that’s a tourist attraction.
Set off on my dads ebike to the base point. Only to find it’s an appointment only system at weekends so I had to ride back to my parents place.
At this point I felt annoyed so cycled to a local rock climb but didn’t get much running done.

Have the. Spent from midday to now drinking beer, cava and wine. Not ideal at all!
Just a Forerunner 645 basic with very basic nav. Unfortunately this was a gift from my wife so I can't really complain :grimace: :p.

Yeah I used to hash every week. Drunk many a pint out of my trainers :p.

It's actually a fantastic way to train - the front runners get a lot of miles in and good speed work, and the pack stays together so the slow runners never get left behind. Am sure the drinking is just carbo loading :D.

I've had a terrible summer. Family emergency and its led to a complete lack of training on my part; I've never really been in a situation where I've felt unable to run but its where I am at the moment :(. Total waste of a very promising year. I'd done ~3,000 miles by the end of June this year, and since nothing.

Need to find the mojo somehow.

I might enter this one, heard about it but never done it. Are you local?

It'll fit nicely between the Pendle Way in a day (which I forgot I'd entered) and the Manchester Marathon.
No the wifes family is though, and it was the first ultra I ever did - a long time ago - so its kinda special to me. It'll be my 7th running :).

Hmm... the PWIAD is tempting..

After getting to half marathon runs a lot happened in my life a few years ago (nothing bad) so I gave up running “for a bit”. Oh how I wish I didn’t make excuses and continued to run!

The bug is back now though I can feel it! Just waiting for some budget running shoes to arrive and I’ll be hitting the pavements again. Overweight and lacking fitness I’ll be starting right back at the beginning of c25k Week 1, Day 1 :(

If by some miracle my fitness returns after a few runs would you guys continue the program or advance ahead slightly? I do not want an injury so my plan is to persevere if needed.
Personally, I'd go slow and steady in your position. If you're keen to do more and want to jump ahead, consider perhaps a walk, or a weighted walk if possible, instead of a run to just allow your body more time to get stronger?

I'd like to find a one stop shop website with a list of calisthenic type leg exercises -
I don't visit gym to have access to any equipment, although could re-start on home rowing machine as part of a balanced exercise diet.
I really rate Vlad Ixels videos on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@VladIxel, even if you dont have kettlebells they are a brilliant starting point, and indeed ongoing maintenance for leg strength. I follow them a lot.

There are loads out there but personally recommend these. Though take from that what you will :p.
