Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

tried 5K non-stop for the first time yesterday. i usually do 2.5K non stop at my limit which is usually around 12.8 km/h, so i dropped the pace to 10.5 km/h and found it easily manageable so roughly 28:40 was my time with me increasing the speed for the last minute.

will try 11 km/h today and see how i get on, then rest on sunday.

Yeah I can set an upper HR limit. But if I don't know my max HR yet then it'll be a bit inaccurate? With the 185 HR at the end of the 10k, I was pushing myself for about 300-350m. How close do you think I was to max?

FT7 is basically exactly the same as FT4 but can store 99 training files instead of less than 10 that the FT4 can hold, and other couple of minor features. But it was about £5 difference, and the FT7 had better colours so yeah.. haha.

on the FT4 you can set a specific band, say 150-170 and then it will warn you if you go over 170 or below 150, i believe this is not possible on other models.

this seems to also hold true for the ft7, which is what i was trying to confirm, i read a review on amazon where the person had both an ft4 and an ft40 as well as some other models i believe and he said the ft4 was cheaper and better for this type of specific training.

an upper heart limit rate does nothing apart from tell you, you are going too fast, but i want something to tell me if i am going too slow as well

Parkrun again this morning, did a part second lap back to the car which took it upto 8k/5m. Loving outdoor running again after a winter on the treadmill. Knee seems 95% fixed and pace is picking up again. So pleased and owe so much to the physio I was seeing.

Is anyone else on the final countdown to the London Marathon next week? It's my first marathon so I'm starting to get a little nervous now, any last minute advice would be appreciated :)

I haven't run in over a month (Bath Half was my last run).

I have a 10km run tomorrow, wondering if I'll have lost much fitness. I'm hoping I can run 4min20 km's.

Lost a bit of motivation recently, but just got myself a new job and feeling a bit more positive. This run tomorrow should spark off some more running I hope.

when I had 3 weeks off over Christmas - the first 2 runs felt not great - legs felt like lead - no spring

but don't let it worry if that does happen as it only lasted 1 or 2 runs - then was feeling much more like myself

Well, I was stiff and panting.

The 3rd km was pretty muddy and we ran about half of the 10km into a headwind.

Managed about 55mins according to endomondo. :(

Not good considering I ran 8km in 34mins a month or so ago.

edit: Appears endomondo jumped from 51mins as I crossed the line to 55mins. I'll just wait for the chip time.

Rest up and stuff yourself with food :)

Good luck!

Entered my first half marathon (robin hood in Nottingham).. Have been at various running clubs over the years but never done a 'proper' half marathon race. Am looking forward to it and hoping for under a 1:45 :)

I've been running small distances for the last year and a half or so in conjuction with weight lifting, just to keep fit and body fat low, but recently have been upping the distance as I'm running a half marathon soon. However, my heels are getting sore after runs and I'm getting slight tingles in my toes on both feet. I use nike dual fusion st 2 running shoes, and they are very well broken in and have never had any problems with them on my shorter ~2 miles. Anyone got any ideas whether it's the shoes, the soles, my technique or is it just until my legs get used to the longer distances? I don't want to seek and medical help regarding the matter as I'm planning on joining the military and don't want anything on my medical records, so any advice on here would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

fastest 5 mile ever tonight - well chuffed

last 3 weeks I've managed just under 7 min mile pace average (6'58) for first time ever

tonight - 6'47 :)

that is a great pace imo for 5 miles, well compared to me anyway.

i think my fastest 1.5 mile is 11:20 so 7'30 min miles.

my fastest 5k is around 27 minutes, my stamina is terrible when i try to run at a faster pace.

I felt like that as well, my pace still really isn't great. But once you get up to bigger miles I think it will improve.

I just took it easy and accepted my 10 minute miles but tonight after around 4 miles my pace started to pick up, which is very unusual for me, I used to try and improve pace on the first mile and then every subsequent miles would be progressively slower.

You just sort of find a rhythm.

How old are the shoes and how many miles have they been run in?

Have you tried loosening them slightly? Ideally, you want the sock to be a snug fit around your foot and the sock to be able to slide around inside the shoe. This stops blisters.

That polar ft4 sounds exactly what I'm after. A HR monitor that I can target a specific range and will let me know if I go above or over. Especially as I'm now looking at specific goals

My 5 mile series is coming to an end now.

Running since August I've managed to set my PB's;

5km - 21m11s
5miles - 34m55s
10km - 47m - could easily drop this to sub 45 but not run it yet.
Half Marathon - 1hr 44mins

I have one 5 mile run left. I want to beat my 34.55 time.

What's the best way to drop this time down? I have a month!

i still have not bought it, but the polar range seems to be the most stupidest i have ever seen in my life.

lower models have functions the higher ones do not, and the higher ones have different / more functions yet cannot do things the basic ones can.

plus there's literally tons of models to choose from, how is anybody supposed to figure out which one is the best one for them?

i sent them an email and they said i should phone a sales adviser rather than answering the questions in my email.

i reckon a sales adviser is most likely going to be working on commission or a sales target and is likely to give me misinformation or even incorrect information for a sale.

also every model has it's own unique styling and colours available meaning if you liked a specific style or colour chances are it isn't available in the type of monitor you need and only the hideous ones are.

anyway i think the FT4 is the best one to go for, but i still have no real idea apart from that one detailed review on amazon of on of the higher models which completely ridiculed it for being worse than his cheaper model.

i suppose the only way to find out would be to test out some models, but i doubt any shop around here has them or would even let you test them.

that's why i haven't pulled the trigger yet, if you do go for the FT4 i would be interested in a full review.

how i normally improve is by increasing the pace on the treadmill by 0.1 km/h every session.

i don't know how you would incorporate that into an outside running environment unless you had gps watch and set it to beep if you went above or below a certain speed.

Yea I don't want one with the likes of GPS etc as my Galaxy S3 can do all of that. Just something that is accurate, comfortable and has a lower limit so I can stay in 'the zone' lol. Cheapest I've seen a blue one is 55quids, so will prob get it this weekend.
