Play from Xbox 360 HARD DRIVE - New feature

True but I would have thought they could have over come that somehow by some kind of encrypted checksum made up of various serial numbers of hardware (cpu serial or something) inside the specific 360 that was used to copy the game.

Ah im dreaming aren't I :D

Every disc is identical so will have the same checksum.

The only way it could be done is to have every disc unique, but that isn't practical during production, the only other way I can immediately think of, is have a section of the game disc writeable, which when first placed in the console writes the serial number to that space (obviously would require a dvd-rw) but then, if the console failed, that would produce a whole new level of headaches as none of your games would work anymore!

I don't like full stops it would seem.

I guess that would work cos it could then be tied into the gamertag, bit of a step backwards though in terms of copy prevention :p

Keygens could be made, surely?

Not one's that work online.

Why are we even discussing this?

You have to get of you arse to 8 seconds to change a disk, big woop.

The way I was thinking it wouldn't matter the discs being the same. The idea is that the hard drive would be the key for the protection instead of the discs. The hard drive would only work on your specific 360 and no one elses after a generated checksum has been written to the hard drive. I'm pretty sure every 360 will have different and unique hardware in the form of serial numbers which could be digitally read, much like PC components.

So what's stopping you copying the disc to your HDD then selling the game on, effectively getting the game for free.

360 1 + Game 1 = Copied game with checksum 1

360 2 + Game 1 = Copied game with checksum 2

How does that stop either 360 from playing the game, bearing in mind that every game will register as Game 1 (assuming it's the same game) as they have the same checksum?

The point is though, the disc wouldn't know it's been installed, someone else could just use it.

I see what u mean.. even xbox live wouldn't help would it, via registering the game, unless the discs were unqiue.. as someone else mentioned which they aren't. So its that or the use of keys... Maybe its safe to say my wish of having games on the drive probably won't come true.

Wonder if there will be in the future some kind of steam like service on the 360 for the big games. That would tick most of the boxes for me.. as long as i'd always be able to download my purchased content in the event of a drive failure, like steam.

It worked for Pro Evo on the PS3, not sure if it was done on the 360 version too, but you could only play it online (well... just about!) with a valid key, which locked to a single PSN ID I think.
It murdered the 2nd hand market though.

Even if you install it on 100 xboxes you will still need the disc inserted in each to play it.

It could be possible that MS have decided to turn a blind eye to the piracy side of things, to boost unit sales, which will still bring in money from DLC.
It worked for the PS2 (obviously not the DLC bit though).

I don't get what you mean. You need the disc in. So no piracy can happen.

Edit: Also people the MS software has not been hacked. A new update is also going to crush any hope that there was in the current software. Don't expect a exploit in the next 2 years.

There'll be an exploit to find, there always is.

It already has. If you want to play copied games you can. I dont think MS can or will worry about a percentage of people who will play pirated software. I applaud them for their efforts to innovate.

I like how this last idea means they've now pretty much copied all the sweet things chipping an Xbox 1 did, minus the actual piracy. :p
