Play the game again? No thanks I've lost interest!

When I was a kid I used to play games that I completed more than once, but as an Adult I've completely lost interest to do so. This is especially true for games that have new game Plus modes or those such as Baldurs Gate whereby you can play as a different character and or game style, with new possibilities. Once I've played a game, it doesn't matter how different the path of completion is, I'm done that's it. Am I the only one? When I was growing up, I must've played Amiga games such as Deuteros, Eye of the Beholder or PC games , Lands of Lore, Death Gate, Shanna many many times but modern ones no!

What is it with the appeal of playing old games over and over again, but modern ones, not so much..

First rule of the internet, you're never the only one.
Secondly, I think it was different because maybe we didn't have such a wide access to games like now back then. I really only used to get games at birthdays and Christmas. I used to pay the **** out of the ones I did have.

I do agree though. It's very rare that I will replay modern games. I will have a play ones I used to enjoy from back in the day like Mario World and some of the zeldas.

Even BG3, undeniably a fantastic game but I really didn't want to play again with a different character or choices. However, I replayed baldur's gate 2 many times.

There are some exceptions I guess like Skyrim and other Bethesda games because I never find everything in one playthrough so I like to create another character rather than continue as one.

I downloaded all of Baldurs Gate 3 again, with the idea of playing as an Evil character/Evil Urge and by the time I got close to the Goblin area I was bored and had no interest. Yet I see people playing it multiple times

Yeah pretty much the same. I guess actually what I didn't mention is I have a restart habit where I will play about an hour or two into a game and then decide to restart to make different choices as opposed to finishing the whole thing and playing through all again which basically never happens.

NG+ may as well not exist for me.

Untrue for me, and quite the opposite. I tend to take such an apprehensive and cautious approach to playing today's games that i only end up playing (that i think are) great ones. So replayability tends to be high, and game library extremely low.

I guess if i had way more time and more money, or gaming was my number one thing, then i'd end up skipping through games like suggested.

Ease of mod usage and quality tends to create a better game than what was previously made, so replayability may be different again.

I'm somewhere in the middle. I don't spend as much time gaming as I'd like so don't tend to finish games. On the other hand if I'm choosing what to play it'll likely be returning to something I've played before rather than starting a new game. I don't think that would change just because I've seen the end credits.

Particularly true in games that are designed to be replayed multiple times like Binding of Isaac, Risk of Rain and Hades which have all featured in my more regular roster. Fairly short but varied seems to be the sweet spot for the time I spend gaming.

I can't say I have ever replayed any modern games to completion.

The last games I recall replaying more than once are

Return to Castle Wolfenstein,
The original Prey,
The very first Far Cry,
Crysis Warhead,
And Half-Life 2 along with its episodes.

Barely ever do NG+ in any game - I much prefer to move on and have a new experience with a different game. Even when I was younger I tended not to replay that many - there were some exceptions, like the original Baldur's Gate, Ultima series. These days I'm not sure many games have sufficient "depth" to encourage a new playthrough ; again, there are exceptions but many are somewhat shallow and rely on graphics over gameplay.

I’m the same used to go back to games I’d enjoyed all the time but think now life puts a stop to it. I only get chance to game when the little one goes to bed for an hour or so, so as my time is limited I tend to play through a game and move on.

That and I find I get bored more easy now of doing endless side quests or empty open worlds, would rather play through more linear games when I do a mission or quest and get the game done.

I couldn't even finish Baldur's Gate 3, was loving it, took a break but now can't get back into it.
Starfield I 100% and will never play again, it was a slog towards the end of the story.

Oddly though games like Bannerlord, I have replayed multiple times due to the sandbox nature of it and self-set challenges.

Absolutely adored BG3, loved all 150 hours of it and still occasionally keep up to date with the changes with YT vids, etc. but I've tried to replay it and I can't. Like you, got to the Goblin area as Durge and just...stopped. Yet I see loads of poeple on their 4th/5th run.

I'm not sure if it's just because it's quite an involved game to really sink into, and my simple monkey brain has already presssed that button once and got the prize; or because I'm forcing myself to play a route that goes against my inate inner 'RP' choices that I enjoyed so much previously. Probably the former, I don't think I'm that deep.

It could be also due to age and sheer amount of games available these days. When I consider replaying something I think of the opportunity cost.

These days there is always some games on my steam to be played list leaving little room to replay even though I do enjoy replaying certain games.

The ones I find myself going back to every few years is Resident Evil games (the OG ones) which are not that long and can complete them relatively quickly. The other is Deus Ex games, mainly the first one.

Other games do not call me as much as they used to. Yet I like having them in my collection as they are if and when I fancy playing them.

Will likely replay Dying Light 2 in the near future though as that offered quite a few changes based on choices made. Though not as much as I had hoped.

Side rant, I really wanted to see that kind of thing more with Cyberpunk 2077 where choices made shaped the world in a way where a new playthrough would feel different enough rather than just static same thing.

My take on it from my perspective anyway.

I expect it depends also on the type of game as well I expect, Titan Quest I've played over and over again along with games such Mechwarrior 5 both of which have a random element to them. Games that i've never touched again tend to be either games that are way too linear or I just lost interest (Mass effect i'm looking at you)

As a kid you don’t have as many games (usually) but do have lots of time.

The games I want to play nowadays I really take my time with them to get as much out of them as I can. That also affects me wanting to replay them.

older games tended to rely on gameplay being fun but then modern games lack other things too.

like Who'd really bother with all the command and conquer games and the dune clones if it wasn't for the cool FMVs?
they used to make a real effort to stand out.
what is not more immersive to have video of Kane etc, than to read some text on a screen or whatever

now no one can be bothered, even supposed AAA or AAAA games are soulless and generic these days

As an older gamer I mainly play older games. Just starting a 3rd Witcher 3 playthrough and have completed Deus Ex-HR 4 times.

I just think it's because they're like an old reliable comfort blanket. I just can't get into new games, probably because my attention span for learning new games and mechanics and even the key bindings is waining!
