Playing Deus Ex for the first time

I really don't care about the graphics, the New Vision and HDTP make things look a bit nicer and its a change from normal but its not exactly gonna stop me playing it.

The AI is so funny though and is obviously showing its age. The enemies can't see more than 5ft and can't hear you running until its too late to turn around except on metal floors. Just had some fun in the train station:

Throwing Knives from a vent shaft, so glad i installed Shifter, they're actually usable :p

So they booby trapped the station eh? Well I booby trapped them right back! Note the crate in the middle of all 3 of them :p

Are you really playing it that dark or is that the normal bug that I see with taking Deus Ex screenshots (making them dark)?

That earlier image posted about every time Deus ex is mentioned someone reinstalls it, seems spot on lol! I want to play it again I really do, but I have to take long breaks from it to appreciate it each time. For example, last time I played it was over 2yrs ago, and I probably won't until maybe another year or so. Strange I know, but I have to do this, to stop myself getting bored with it. It's one of my favourite games EVER.

Seems to happen a lot with Deus Ex screenshots. Think orderoftheflame had the DX9 lighting thing on and even then it wasn't applying light to screenshots.

Yup. I also started playing this again over the weekend.

I think it's just a funny to do with how the lighting is applied, but it's never showed in screenshots right for me.

Really not the graphics I'm playing it for though. :D

I think this is a pretty common occurrence when somebody plays Dues Ex now. The thing is, as much I don't think graphics matter, it does look dated. I actually haven't played it for years and probably never will again for that reason - I don't want my memories of it to be spoiled.

*shrug* I dunno, if anything playing it again can get you more. Shifter also gives enemies more randomised inventories so I just picked up a Sword from Battery Park inside Castle Clinton and because enemies can hold Throwing Knives they can actually be used.

Great moment of peaking around a corner after heading in the back entrance of Castle Clinton and chucking a knife at some poor sods head.

I'm the same, never played the game fully, always installed the demo level and got bored really quickly.

Its on my list for this summer! :)

Just incase some people are annoyed with other parts of the skills reward system, I suggest the lovely mod Shifter.

Changes very little about Deus Ex; polishes it I reckon!

Just to check, is this advisable to use for a first run through? I'm not far into the game, so restarting to apply this mod wouldn't make much work for me, and if it makes the game better than it would be silly not to install it.

In my opinion, it's one of those games that hasn't aged badly at all. Ran it on my laptop the other day @ 1920x1200 and I really enjoyed it. It's just past that generation where games really looked liked crap.

Then again I still enjoy Soldier of Fortune. :o

Good question mate. All I could say is that whilst I love the mod, my first playthrough was without any mods at all. And, similar to a lot of people, I had tried it a few times and never got past the first level.

But when I eventually did, I never put it down. Fantastic game, with or without mods.
If I were you I'd just keep going, then have a play with mods after.

Hmm. Well it does fix a few things that should've been in game but weren't for some reason (they were found in the source files and fixed I believe). It doesn't do anything drastic (unless you play Unrealistic mode ><) but it does boost skill point gain quite a lot by including them for kills and it also allows you to use regular canisters to upgrade augmentations which might change things a bit, especially on the lower difficulties so its up to you.

Its compatible with existing save games so you wouldn't even have to start again if you did.

Think I'll stick the DX10 renderer on with New Vision and Shifter and restart my game, thankfully I'm not far on in my current play through.

What was quite annoying was recently when they enabled in-game screenshots with Steam. Every time you activate the light aug, you would be taking a shot! (until you changed the Steam settings ofc)
