Playing Half Life 2 for the first time

Just bought a brand new ROM of Episode One from Amazon however when I hit autorun it is asking for a product key. Usually there would be a booklet with the key but there isn't one in the box or anywhere else. Anyone got any ideas to help me?

Edit: So I contacted the seller who just apologised, refunded me and told me to keep the disc. I can't help feeling I'm missing something though. Or was it just a case that the booklet with the product key code was missing? I guess I'll never know...

I haven't played HL1 either. Doesn't take anything away from what was a brilliant gaming experience. I intend to pick up the fan made remake of HL1 Black Mesa at some point in the not too distant future...
 
The only thing disappointing about the episodes is that they aren't long enough. They are a fair enough length as far as expansions/DLCs go it's just they're so great you want more... do yourself a favour and pick them up. I picked them both up as DVD ROMs from Amazon for £2-3 each.

Portal 1 was just superb, a real genre changer. Not quite as much "story" as Portal 2, but both are incredible in their own way.

Ties in with the "Half-Life" universe by being the competing company to "Black Mesa", "Aperture Science", which I believe is referenced in HL2:EP2.

Oh? I'd always been slightly put off as I had seen them described as 'puzzle games'. I don't mind the odd puzzle in a game such as in the Tomb Raider games or Darksiders but a game that is predominantly all puzzles would likely frustrate me. Do the Portal games has a decent story and similar game mechanics to Half Life then?
 
Just completed Black Mesa which was my first experience of Half Life after playing Half Life 2 first. What at and awesome experience - pure gaming heaven and I think I actually enjoyed it a tiny bit more than Half Life 2. However - after now playing Half Life 2, Episode 1 & 2 and now Black Mesa, I still haven't got the faintest idea what the hell is going on!?

Ok, so I get that Black Mesa were doing some sort of research and did they open a portal to another world or something? At the end of Black Mesa/Half Life I jumped into a portal and then it ends. Half Life 2 begins with the green eyed man telling me to wake up but where did I go when I jumped into the portal? Who is the green eyed man?
Would anyone care to give me a summary of the story? I suppose I could always google it...
