I really want to play some older PC games like the following;
X-Wing
Tie Fighter
Alone in the Dark
Blade Runner
X-wing vs Tie fighter
X-wing: Alliance
Sam and Max
Grim Fandango
Day of the tentacle
The Dig
Is the best way to play these games to get them off ebay and use dosbox? Is the emulator any good and does it have sound etc? How about Grim Fandango, Blade Runner and xwvtf being windows 95(?) games? I also saw a 'lucasarts classic' collection reviewed in either PC zone or gamer about 2 years ago but have never seen it on sale, has anyone heard of it? Cheers!

Have you tried using the Compatibility Tab in Windows XP. You canthen run the games in compaitbility mode for Win 95, 98 etc if they don't work with WinXP.

One other possibilitry is to use Virtual PC or WMWare to run the older versions of Windows or just dual boot?

Dosbox is pretty good and it does have sound iirc.

An alternative is to go shopping and build and oldschool rig. You could probably try and install windows98 on a seperate partition. :)

The Lucasarts collection has been re-coded to run under XP. Games are The Dig, SamnMax,Full Throttle & Grim Fandango). Sam n Max & Full Throttle also new gfx modes to smooth out the jaggies a little. This link is the ex Lucasarts programmer who did the coding. I have this collection. GAME still sell it for under £15.

Alone In The Dark games are very picky about original Soundblaster cards some work under emulation some don't. This site has plenty of tips about getting old games to run under newer hardware/os.

Many older Dos & W95/98 games do run under XP. Some require disabling the CPU L2 cache. For best results just pick up a 486PC as you can get a good working one with monitor & keyboard for under £35 from most 2nd hand computer shops.

The Lucas arts games will run under SCUMMVM, just copy the disk contents onto your hard drive, tell scummvm where it is and enjoy the best adventure games known to man.
Add the Monkey Island series to your list as well.

I would do, but I have that (and the sequel) playing fine on my amiga emulator!!

It may be a stupid question, put could a standard 486 PC use a CRT or TFT monitor? If so then I suppose it wouldnt take up too much room...
Yeah as long as the gfx card has an s-vhs or tv-out port. Trouble is that may be rare/hard to come by nowadays as if it is a 486 then the gfx card will be a PCI version methinks. May be better to buy a cheapo tv tuner card instead but again may be hard to find.

I would recommend Dosbox. I use it to play pushover, cannon fodder, dune 2, populous 2, simcity 2, settlers 2, theme park. It just plain rocks for old games
