Hi all
I wish to buy a violin
something that is good but doesn't break the bank

what kind of violin should I get?

Buy an electric one, that way you can wear headphones and reduce (but not eliminate) the noise to everyone nearby as you start to learn how to play it...

I think my wife's is a yamaha.

Best thing to do is go to a shop and try several in your budget and see what you like the sound of.

I bought mine from Guivier in London. Dpending on your budget you could try ebay for second hand ones. Try them before bidding! Might be worth talking to local violin teachers to get an idea where to look, and maybe go with you to try it out as well. Some online stores may let you try several at home before buying, I did this when I wanted a new bow.

I use a metal mute that confines the sound to the room. http://www.thestringzone.co.uk/heavy-weight-chrome-plated-violin-viola-practice-mute

Don't buy a electric one, they will not be as good as a standard violin for the money.

In my experience, unless you're spending decent money you won't get a decent instrument, second hand is always the best value for money but you've got to hunt. Go to a music shop, ask for one thats good for beginners, any reputable music shop will be able to advise you on it and a good place to get lessons.
(Trust me, you'll need lessons, better than any crappy book)

Don't spend the money until you're sure you'll get the use.

u know when u say full size
how will I know will it just be full sized violin?

I am probably going 2nd hand for sure

I too am searching for a decent violin to learn to play, I played a little at school that that was over half a lifetime ago.

How are you getting on with your search?
