I seen this thing in forums and on YouTube where they suggest that at ps1, early model with the RCA audio out is an excellent CD player.

Has anyone tried it?

I have one, and i thought it might be fun… but haven’t bothered yet .

I used to use mine as a CD player, and it worked well. I could put the stereo output to my Aiwa mini system.

Couldn't tell you much on audio quality as it was over 30 years ago and I was about 12 at the time

Sony PlayStation (the SCPH-1001 model with the RCA jacks on the back). Audio enthusiasts went crazy for it because Sony accidentally included a highly musical AKM (Asahi Kasei Microdevices) DAC chip paired with an exceptionally well-designed analog output stage.

I've tried it in the past, but I seriously doubt my ears and any audio equipment it was connected to, were good enough to extract any meaningful differences. Your milage may vary.

Playstation? Pah! My first CD player was an Amiga CD32...

But yeah, people raving that the original playstation is a decent CD player is something I've seen mentioned on a couple of audiophile sites and forums.

It's an audiophile myth. It's not a bad CD player by any means but it's nothing special. I happen to still have this model of PlayStation from the olden days and it's not very convenient as a CD player. You need to have a controller connected to start playback and as a top loader you obviously can't put it underneath anything.

I kinda remember playing cd’s on mine too, but was likely just through a crt tv at the time.

Was thinking about bringing it downstairs and hooking it up to the avr to see what it’s like.

Although I do have a hearing aid, so probably not the most detailed or experienced listener of music!

I know in the world of cds a sacd player and cds are best.

It was more just a fun wee thing I came across.

You people planted a seed in my brain. I've dusted off the old Playstation and hooked it up to my some cheapish monitors. It makes for quite a decent kitchen stereo!

Quite fun to get the PlayStation startup sounds every time I want to listen to a CD :D

Haha, well done! I’ll try copy you tomorrow, see what it sounds like!

That sounds cool, a wee blast from the past every time you listen.
