PlayStation 3 Hands-on @ IGN

I need to see one to believe, not impressed with the sales pitch Sony has put out unlike the 360 sales pitch, too many "yeah but its got this" and wjhy would ou want to play your PS3 from 40 feet from the TV, my 360 pad cuts out after I leave the room with the headset on to get a beer etc. and cuts back in when I enter the room, thus saving battery power.

I find it slightly hilarious that they're getting excited by a front slot loading dvd drive of all things.

What else is there to get excited about the ps3.

(runs away) ;)

Everything the mentioned about the controller is exactly what I was dreading, notably that it's uncomfortable and too light, I never even noticed the shoulder triggers were convex, I mean come-on! How stupid is that!?

Also why are IGN UK reviewing one, sums up Sony "lets laugh at the customers yet give UK reviews a console thats not out in that region for 5 months"

Maybe they've seen the negative press in the UK and thought "We'd best promote it positively", then gave one to IGN only for them to say the best part was a CD loading drive and leave it at that.

Anyone see an alarming amount of dust gathering around the CD drive after a few months? Get the cotton-buds out!

The controller doesn't sound very good does it

I always hated the PS1 & PS2 controllers anyway. When my best mate first got an orgional playstation i remember going round and saying; wow my microsoft sidewinder pad on my PC is a lot better than this.

Then the same comparing a PS2 pad to either of the origional xbox pads (with the exception of hitting the black and white buttons on the large pad).

Now my 360 pad is as comfy as my 7 year old leather that has my ass print worn into it and it looks like sony have missed the ergonomics 101 class yet again which is a shame.

The difference is, Sony's pads are made for people with little hands and Microsoft caters for the average American/European hands.

Thats why people with good hand sizes like me feel more comfortable using the 'natural' layout of the Xbox360 pad and struggle when bending the left thumb further to the right to reach the left analogue stick. Whilst not being difficult to do, my thumb does tire a lot quicker.

The Sony pads are indeed smaller, but..... it isn't just that that makes them not as good. Even if they were Xbox pad sized, they'd still be poo. I wonder if they have improved the analogue stick over the PS2 pad, to make it usable for driving games.

the ps2 pad is still my favourite pad out of all the pads i have used.

bought a 360 yesterday and that probably comes 2nd.

When I've played GT3 and 4 on the PS2, I've had to use the d-pad for steering because the stick was useless. The d-pad worked well and seems to be pressure sensitive, but it isn't a patch on the Xbox controller for driving games. Playing Enthusia, a driving game which makes you use the analogue stick only, was an exercise in frustration and annoyance.

Oh well I sold my PS2 anyway so it's someone else's problem now :p

Playing Enthusia was an excercise in frustration and annoyance not because you had to use the sticks, but rather that the game sucked ass.

I hated the PS2 controller, it used to hurt my hands after using it for a long time.

The 360 controller is near perfect except for the D-pad which I never use anyway.

It's only a machine!?

Anyway, here's a quote in IGN article:
Well, as of right now nothing - the debug unit Sony's demoed to us still features slightly outdated firmware, meaning the machine flatly refuses to play anything other than Blu-Ray discs. Similarly, all attempts to connect our PSPs and Cyber-shot digi-cams to the console were met with resounding indifference.
Thats a month before launch date!
