So I have just initiated myself into the world of console gaming by buying myself a PS3. Before it'll let me create a PSN account, it told me it has to do a software update. Okay, so I clicked yes. It has been 5 minutes, and the download is only 11% complete. This is on a 50Mb/s internet connection. Exactly how ridiculously massive are these updates? Or: Exactly how ridiculously slow are Sony's servers?

It has taken another 5 minutes to type this out, and now it's at 21%. So at least the speed is roughly consistent.

Speeds can be pretty dire unfortunately, so you're not the only one. Are you doing it wired or wireless?

If you're on Virgin then the blame lies with them.

How so? My speeds are absolutely stellar on my PC. I actually often get a higher download rate than I'm paying for.

Would it be faster in future to download updates from my PC onto a USB stick, and load it onto the PS3 from there?

Wireless. I do not own an ethernet cable long enough to reach my router from my living room.

It suddenly sped up towards the end, so it's done now. Hooray, I guess?

Downloading Final Fantasy 7 on it now. It takes about 10 seconds for each megabyte. Wow, that's slow. I might look into setting up a wired connection to it after all.

Welcome to the pain 90% of ps3 users feel. If you think 1 system update was slow, don't buy GT5 you will be a melting wreck writhing on the floor by the time it's done updating

Go wired and download during the night. Rumours are that VM see PSN like a file sharing protocol so throttles it...

ps3ud0

Indeed. I get a faster connection on my 4mb adsl than i did on my 20mb Virgin connection. They throttle it to hell and back.

Sweeping statement ahoy. The only provider to throttle PSN services is Virgin, unless you're complaining about Polyphony Digital offering shed loads of update content for free?

You don't have to download patches for games, just disconnect from the PSN before you launch it, personally I'm a fan of all the updates GT5 has gotten over the past year. It's improved the game significantly and for free.

It's interesting then that Virgin don't see actual file sharing such as utorrent as a file sharing protocol, because I get great speeds on that.

It becomes a part of PS3 life after a while. One day you'll D/L on another console and shout "My goodness, this is crazy fast!" :P

So did you make this thread purely to moan about Sony or what? Man up for goodness sake.

I made the thread to ask why I was getting such poor download speeds over what is usually an exceptionally fast connection. It seems a bit odd for you to get so defensive over it.

LOL really? complaints about poor speed on PSN are pretty common, the guy has just got the console and was asking a valid question.

I just assumed somebody would have researched their purchase beforehand, the console is pretty old now as well, it's obvious there are going to be some updates to download and as for the issue with Virgin/PSN and slow downloads, it has been well documented and a quick Google before buying would have shown this.

It didn't seem like he was asking that much, he just came on here to complain. FWIW the PSN gives me download speeds in line with what I get on my PC and 360.

Why would I specifically search for ps3 download speeds unless I already suspected there would be an issue? It may be documented, but since it didn't occur to me that it might have bandwidth problems, I didn't search for it. For the record, I don't actually care that much about it, it just takes a bit of the shine off a thing that I'm otherwise very happy with.

Sweeping satatement? I was speaking from personal experience. I have sky broadband - terrible psn dl speeds, had ask4 at Uni, terrible dl speeds, my bro has virgin 100mb fibre.. Terrible dl speeds on psn. I assumed that the psn servers were to blame for the slow speeds seing as I'd experienced it on several ISPs.

No despite your sweeping statement I have no problem with good free content it's one of the things that makes a game special. It's just very frustrating when a a small file can take an hour to dl and seconds to install.

i'm on sky and suffer the same problem.

i have 3 consoles, a few pc's and laptops all connected to sky and PS3 is the only one that downloads at a snails pace.

i'd say get used to PSN being slow and get used to slowly downloading a game to then wait for it to slowly install to then be told there is an update for your newly downloaded game that takes another age to download and install.

p.s.
also get used to people being defensive about how slow PSN is ;)
