Playstation updates

I'm on Plusnet up to 8MB ADSL and honestly, PSN download speeds are just random, and it's something I accepted.

Also using wired connection. I find that PS3's wireless is really crap for anything other than gaming which it is actually very good at, assuming you have no interference and all bandwidth to yourself obviously.

I just assumed somebody would have researched their purchase beforehand, the console is pretty old now as well, it's obvious there are going to be some updates to download and as for the issue with Virgin/PSN and slow downloads, it has been well documented and a quick Google before buying would have shown this.

It didn't seem like he was asking that much, he just came on here to complain. FWIW the PSN gives me download speeds in line with what I get on my PC and 360.

I think you need to chill out a bit, this clearly wasn't a troll topic.

As for PSN speeds, mine have always been fine on O2 broadband. Virgin users seem to have the most problems, for whatever reason.

I have the same issue with my internet connection (it's slow enough as it is at 2Mb, but it takes so much longer to download anything on my PS3 for some reason), but ever since I signed up to Playstation Plus I don't really have to put up with it as much. With the Automatic Update system enabled I just set the console to boot itself up at 8AM when I leave for work and it'll go through my list of games/queued downloads and download whatever needs to be :p If you're wanting to get PS+ for the great collection of games it offers already, the Automatic Updates just make it so much more of a bargain.

Sweeping satatement? I was speaking from personal experience. I have sky broadband - terrible psn dl speeds, had ask4 at Uni, terrible dl speeds, my bro has virgin 100mb fibre.. Terrible dl speeds on psn. I assumed that the psn servers were to blame for the slow speeds seing as I'd experienced it on several ISPs.

No despite your sweeping statement I have no problem with good free content it's one of the things that makes a game special. It's just very frustrating when a a small file can take an hour to dl and seconds to install.

'Speaking from personal experience' wouldn't have been a sweeping statement, claiming '90% of PSN users' with no evidence to back up said claim is however a textbook example of a sweeping statement.

My retort however was not an example sweeping statement as I did not speak for, or claim to have knowledge of the opinions or viewpoints of a large number of people without factual information to back it up. You can brush up here:

OP it seems that you do get varied download speeds with different providers, although I'm with Virgin and have no issues at all, but I'm wired and not wireless. One thing I would really recommend though is joining PS+. Playstation+ users can set their consoles to download all system and games updates overnight, so you just turn your PS3 on in the morning and it's all ready for you with a nice little report of what's been updated etc. Also you get over 40 full free games a year and you can set your game saves to backup online - well worth the £40 per year you pay for it.

I think it's still on offer for £30 at the minute too!

No thanks, I spend enough time at work trying to explain complexities to people. Life is just too short to go around picking up on absolutely everything someone types, someone could develop serious back problems being that uppity.

OP asked if other people had experienced slow psn speeds, I provided my opinion based upon my experiences and those of my peers. If you don't agree with my opinion then I suggest that you no longer use forums as it is likely that the vast majority of people wont agree with your opinions. I won't stoop to your level and provide a dictionary definition of the word forum because, as I said, life is just too short to go arguing over use of words in a simple offhand comment posted on an Internet forum

I always download big PS3 updates on my PC and put it on a USB then install to the PS3, way faster. Dont know why but downloading through a PS3 is way slower than on my PC, wonder if they use different servers for it.

If the popular rumour is to be believed, it's because the protocol used for the PSN is throttled. This does make sense if you consider that downloading to the PC would be via a standard http/ftp transfer.

The PS3 online system is all to pot and always has been. It is slow and updates are stupidly large.
