There are 8 physical cores in the AMD CPUs, with two per module. Because of the modular structure some people say there are only four 'true' cores, but it depends on how you define it. There's no disputing though that this is much more efficient than hyperthreading, which can even harm performance in some circumstances. The 8 core FX processors only come into their own when all 8 cores are used, they'd perform far worse with only 4.
As for future games we'll see in a year's time what the benchmarks are saying. We can go on the latest engines and see that the FX8350 performs excellently compared to i5/i7 CPUs. Whether it's better or worse will depend on the game and other factors.
