If I were you I'd order the next CPU up from that, as it comes with double the cache. It's £70 more, but an extra 2mb of cache and 300mhz is a lot for your money.

This is something I'd almost always agree on, but I've recently had to use my awful ancient one and it's just crap. A new one should ensure that if you do for some silly reason come to use one (BIOS update or whatnot) then you wont get corruption like I did

Unless you have an ancient motherboard you should be able to boot from a pen drive, at the very least from a CD.

I haven't had a floppy drive for about 4 years and never missed it :D

you mena the beloved floopy is obselete already.. and here i thought they are still useful.. i will drop the floppy then

my problem is that i have 1000 pounds to spend..(and thats the max.. mum is goign to kill me if i go overboard).. as i still need a tft monitor..

my plan is to spend 850 on the base unit and 150 on a 19" tft monitor..

if i go 6600 like i want to i have to downsize monitor to 17..

please commend or would the experts spec me a base unit + monitor without a psu unit for 1000...
thanks

You could drop the Audigy 4 (for onboard), go for a smaller hard drive and swap the 7900 GT for the £160.92 (inc VAT) X1800 XT.

All would be very easy to upgrade later (hard drive = just add another, graphics card = add a shiny new DX 10 card in a year or so, sound card = add when you have the spare cash).

hmm that may be a good idea.. go for a smaller hd and crappier graphics card and wait till dx10..

i don;t htink i can order the 1800xt as i don;t intend to order yet..
i would be waiting till after conroe is released before i make my order
reasons
1) wants to know the oc capability so i can adjust ram purchase
2) in case retail conroe is unocable and amd price drops enough that i may switch to an amd system

so my system is good to go.. jsut drop ram, get 200gb hd.. and wait for the reviews and go 6600

ps: is the asus p5b a good oc board? most of the talk is about hte pw5dh which is out of my budget
