Please explain download speed

20mbit will mean a max download speed of 2500 kilobytes per second, also you're unlikely to get the maximum like you said.

Untrue i think. I have a 2mbit line so i should be able to get no more than 0.25 (250kb) download speed.

Internet download manager downloads single files sometimes at 270kbps and 5 files sometimes faster (this is off rapidshare servers)

kbps or KB/s?

What's the downstream attenuation? Mine is around 39 (I'm a couple of miles from the exchange as thr crow flies) and I sync at 12,500 kbps which leads to a download rate of 1.2-1.3MBps (megabytes per second).

It'll depend on your sync speed. When I had a 2Mb connection the actual sync speed was just over that. Your modem or router must be syncing at above 2Mb, otherwise it would not actually be possible to download at that speed.

This is still going on. I emailed him this:

Are you still concerned about your download speed?

As I said yesterday, Broadband speeds are advertised as Megabits per second, not Megabytes - i.e. 20Mb, not 20MB. (Notice the little b – you are not on a 20 MEGABYTE line, so you will not download at 20 Megabytes a second.)

To get the actual downstream speed per second, you need to divide the advertised speed number (20 in your case) by 8. So, on a 20Mb connection, the maximum actual download speed you'll get from a website is 2.5MB.

20 Megabits = 2.5 megabytes (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=20+megabits+in+megabytes&meta=)

You are on a 20 megabit line with O2 and so you should be downloading around 2.5 megabytes a second, which from what you told me yesterday, you are. Be happy as that is very quick!!! J

and he said:

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,174 / 3,095

that is 3.095 megabits per second and i am on a 20mbps package. lots of people get 16,000mbps as they live close to exchanges. i would have thought that living only 400m from the TW exchange would give me similar speeds. but apparently from looking at my attenuation:

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 28.5 / 49.0

the line seems to be around 3.5km long between my house and the exchange. longer lines are normal as they do not go straight-as-the-crow. but 3.5km is pretty loopy line for 400m. might have something to do with it being a new build or the exchange not updated for the new property yet or sumfin.

but im not complaining the speed is fine for surfing and stuff, would just be really really cool to get 16mbps or closer to it, at least 6-8!

I don't really understand!! I think I have lost the will to live.

right, so he isnt talking about download speeds then, he is talking specifically about the synch speed of his modem.

In reality he will be getting around 350kb/s download speeds.

Unlucky to have a 3.5km line when hes physically only 400m from the exchange though :) It always amazes me the routes some phonelines take.

That synch speed is probably a bit low given the attenuation though. I have seen lines at nearly 60dB synching at 6Mbit.

Tell him to read up about ringer wires and better filters etc. He may be able to eek another few Mbit out of the line.

I removed the ringer wire on my internal wiring recently, went from 16Mbit on BE to 21Mbit.

Not actually true on O2, I have a bog standard Thomson O2 wireless II box and it's synced at 22,520 kbps right now.

Indeed, I get similar speeds on my o2 line. They support the maximum speed ADSL2+ allows, but only headline 20mbit as the maximum speed in order to reduce people's expectations.

20mbit is still beyond most lines though, so this seems a little pointless.

It is exactly what I told you it is... take a look at my posts earlier up in this thread! :p

No offence to you mate, but you are actually confusing him more especially because everything he has told you is accurate and his concerns are genuine, whereas what you told him has been useless :p

I am confused by everything now and I actually don't care any more.

Thanks for everyone's input though :p

I haven't as the 1.4mb upload is plenty for me.

Not sure what happened with the double post there. I didn't even have ocuk open at the time of that second post.

Strangeness. The joys of forum software.

For my development work upload is the main thing so that's the reasoning for my interest.
