At 01:56 He start shooting the photos using a telephoto/zoom lens.
Can anyone explain to me whats the benefit using a Telephoto/Zoom lens rather than a 35mm or 50mm Prime lens so he doesnt need to walk far away from the object?

Distortion.

More specifically, your face looks better and the camera doesn't add 10Ibs with a longer lens.

You can try this with a compact camera. Take two photos of somebody at opposite ends of the zoom range, filling the frame with their face.
