Hi Overclockers, I've dug out an old laptop from the back of my shed and want to check whats on the HDD before I dispose of it. The laptop no longer powers on and think it needs a new battery which I'm not willing to purchase due to throwing it out.

So I've removed the HDD which is a Toshiba MK6006GAH, 50 pin, Rev A00, HDD1544 DD ZK01, 3.3 V DC and are looking to purchase an adaptor that will convert to USB. I've looked through the internet, but there are too many options to chose from, so any advice would be appreciated.

TIA

Barry

Your best would be to use an IDE adapter to get the drive into a USB caddy which has IDE support.

It looks like it uses the smaller laptop IDE interface, which has 44 pins. You can buy these, but you need to supply the drive with some power using the molex connector.

After Googling, it looks as though times have moved on since I bought my 44-pin to 40-pin laptop IDE to IDE connector, which was only used once. You can now buy laptop IDE to SATA connectors, which should make it easy to connect the drive to a PC without the need for a USB caddy.

I'd check the power supply is still working first, check it with a multimeter. If that's working OK I'd then remove the battery from the laptop and see if it powers up without. And if that doesn't work I'd remove the cmos battery, short the terminals in the cmos battery socket to see if that resets it, then put a new cmos battery in and try again. Or google the laptop to check if it has a cmos reset jumper somewhere. If the psu is borked then go for the adaptor, or look for a cheap psu or bodge something.
