well i have to say i was looking at desktops aswell and found what i think was a better spec for £100 less. I'm also guessing upgrading a desktop is easier than a laptop? but to be honest i really like the thought that i can go round to a friends and, with relative ease, take my laptop and we can game together even if it will be used mainly as a desktop would be.

I understand there is a prejudice against gaming laptops as opposed to desktops, can I ask why this is? Other than what i briefly mentioned in the above post?

Desktops tend to be far easier to upgrade. Many laptops contain soldered parts that can't be swapped out.
The parts that can be changed also frequently have a higher premium due to more compact designs being required for laptops compared to desktops.
It is a good Lappy spec the only thing that would concern me for max settings on modern games is the lack of video memory. 2gig+ seems to be the norm now and would certainly help to future proof it a little.
I'm not an expert by any stretch but if you ask there are guys here who could easily spec you a system for a given budget. Bear in mind too you will get more for your money if you self assemble, assuming you have the knowledge. Failing that some of the premade systems from ocuk are amazing.

with regards to the vram will i still be able to play the more demanding games on medium settings? that is the only thing bugging me aswell. how does this one compare to a 2gb gt 740m?

i cannot build my own computer (at least i have never tried, i hate the term but i am a noob).

would love to try building my own desktop but i think it would be more of a long running project for me. Also im guessing with the new consoles theres gonna be some pretty big breakthroughs in gaming technology so i assume computer bits are going to get more expensive (in real terms) quicker and they will become outdated quicker so i would be better off waiting a couple of years before i start trying a project like that?

as i said before i am a noob, but from what i have read ivy bridge still has a fair lifespan ahead and i already own some extra external cooling fans if the point was haswells are better at controlling heat in laptops? it is a pre-built system so yeh kinda the price for what im getting (considering my original budget cap was 600 ha)

Quite the opposite! Console hardware is fixed. Therefore games designers have to be more efficient with the design of games to make them look or run better. Thus you get more bang for your buck out of hardware bringing down the price in real terms. Also current gen consoles are more closely related to pc architecture than ever before which helps.
For example I have a three year old mid range CPU and am currently running bf4 on ultra at 1080p and getting over 40fps in multiplayer games.

ah i see what your saying, so the parts that are out now should be able to build a system that can match and beat ALL console games in terms of performance for the duration of the lifespan of this generation of consoles?

have decided i am just going to go for this laptop btw, i dont think il find a pre-built laptop with better specs for any less.

will definately look into building a desktop at some point soon though, but as i say it will likely be a step at a time and a longer project. I have no experience building computers and spread out it will feel easier on the wallet. Can also take the time to make sure i get compatible components. Thats the most daunting aspect i feel, making sure you dont get an under or over powered PSU and fry your whole system, compatible chipsets etc. Im sure when the time comes i will find plenty of helpful souls on this forum though as i have done tonight!

thanks a lot!

may i ask why that is?

Less heat, less power and so on. But for the price this machine is amazing, only thing I would say to watch out for is the heat, maybe buy a cooling stand.

I had a similar spec'd laptop and it would sometimes turn of during games cause it would over heat, but once I got a cooling stand it fixed things up and worked much better.

a 670mx would be a lot faster than a 740m even with the extra vram, a 740 will manage high settings at 720p where as a 670mx would manage high settings at 1080p a lot of the time
