Hey guys,

I've had my computer for around 3 years now and thankfully have had no problems. I've hardly used the computer in all honesty but recently I've started getting back into a few games.

So the other night I was playing a game and my computer force reset itself; like an update had downloaded and installed or something. When I switched it back on everything seemed normal, the boot option menu appeared, then after that the windows loadup screen, however, my computer screen went on to lose signal just before the desktop loaded up.

I give all my components a thorough clean, reset the CMOS and changed HDMI leads, even tried loading the computer up with 1 stick of RAM. However, everything lead to that no signal screen after the windows loading screen. I went into safe mode to restore it to an earlier time, but to my misfortune there were no restore points. So I formatted my SSD and my HDD and re-installed a fresh windows.

Everything worked great, the desktop loaded up. I installed all my bios drivers and windows updates. Then I tried installing my GPU drivers off the disk and reset the computer. Back to square one, I couldn't get past the windows loading screen. I went into safe mode and cleaned all my display drivers with some software and I was able to go back onto my desktop. This time I downloaded the most recent beta drivers from the AMD website to see if that would work. Installed them and the same thing happened again on restart. So now I've wiped the drivers clean again and I'm back on the desktop.

I'm thinking my GPU might have packed in but I'm not too sure. I'm such a newbie when it comes to this.. What does it sound like to you guys? I don't fancy paying out for a new card if there's a fix for my situation which doesn't involve spending money!

Remove the CPU heatsink, clean thoroughly, and add new thermal paste. Also re-seat the CPU carefully, without bending the socket pins. See if that does that trick. Did for me once with those symptoms you've described.

I've read many horror stories about applying thermal paste, so I'll find someone more experienced in my family to take a look. I'll get back to you then!

Ps. still welcome to suggestions. Is it worth noting that my older GPU works fine and I have no problems with display?

Definitely worth noting. It's also possible the newer GPU is faulty. But you do get a display... it just freezes/re-starts on Windows, so right now I think it less likely to be the GPU itself.

The older GPU might just put less stress on the CPU.

If you can give your newer GPU to someone in your family to test on their system, at the same time they do the thermal paste for you, that would also help eliminate it as the cause.
