Hi, Trying to figure out how to make a switch that either supplies 12v or 5v to my fan controller. Dont have a clue what type of switch i need but would like a push button type.

This is the basic jist of what i need to do

Ive read that best would be a "break before make switch"

Any Single pole, double throw SPDT switch will do you for that job.
A diagram of how the switch works can be found here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switch

It should be fine

Why do you want to do this though?

When connecting 12v to fan controller i can only control between 5v-12v
when connecting 5v to fan controller i can control between 1v-5v

so basically allows me to reduce speed further when neccesary

Could you link me a suitable switch please, im a complete noob in this field

To clarify as posted above this would work for you
http://uk.farnell.com/bulgin/mpl027/vandal-resistant-switch/dp/9638482

All you need is an is an SPDT switch that is Latching

SPDT = 1 commen pin and 2 imput pins that it switches between.

Latching = Each time the switch is pressed the state of the switch is changed but the button returns to is flush position. Like the power buttin on a pc

Ok cool, just to clarify with a switch like this would in be a 3pin switch

eg
pin 1 - 12v
pin 2 - 5v
pin 3 - output

or is it more complicated than that

Yes that one should work I havnt looked at any other sites but anyone that sells electrical components should do them the important factors are that its SPDT(which is the same as SPCO SPTT) and latching.
