I am quite sure that my Asus P5N-E SLI motherboard can support a Q6600 LGA775 65nm Core 2 Quad processor but I am not sure whether my PSU would be able to handle the upgrade, or whether I will need to upgrade the heatsink or not.

Here are the details on my PSU sticker:

Is my PSU good enough for the new processor? Would I need to upgrade the heatsink? My current processor is a E6550 Core 2 Duo 2.33Ghz.

NB: I know I have already posted a thread about this but no one seems to be responding. I am sorry to moderators who will see this as spam but I am just trying to get an answer.

PSU should be fine I would expect, but does it have an 8-pin CPU power connector? Tbh I forget whether the P5N-E even has an 8-pin socket so it may not be an issue.

As for the heatsink, depends what you've got really.

My graphics card is a GeForce GTX 260 896Mb.

I would send a pic of my heatsink, but when it says to type the URL of the picture I don't know what to put. I have tried putting the file location in there but it still doesn't work. :(

Thx for your help :) Here is a pic of my heatsink, would it be good enough for the Q6600 without overclocking?

Resize the picture

That's a normal Intel retail heatsink, if you're buying the quad as a retail package you will get another heatsink with it anyway. I should imagine your current cpu is getting quite toasty at the moment judging by the amount of dust in there ;)

It could be a close call with your current psu, as your GTX260 really requires a minimum of 38 amps on the 12v rails, and I notice yours only has 35. The only thing you can do is try it and see. I think I'd probably invest in a better psu before thinking about new cpus though.

My graphics card seems to work fine despite what you said, and I have cleaned out my CPU so now it is pretty much dust-free.

If I do try the processor, is there any risk it will break my PSU or any other components?

If there isn't, I may as well give it a go, I can get one on eBay for around £60. ;)

I think a lot of dual cores are supplied with a lighter low profile cooler compared to the one supplied with quads, so its possible that the E5300's cooler wont be as good as the retail cooler for a Q9450. I'd get an aftermarket cooler if going for an oem processor.

As for the PSU, it's an older design with a heavy 5v rail, and only 35amps at 12V. (My Corsair 650W has 52amps @ 12v). However if your not running SLI, its probably going to be "ok". Corsair for example say its ok to run a GTX260 + Core 2 Quad + 2 Hard disks on their VX450 PSU and it only has 33amps @ 12v. At full load the GTX260 uses less power than the older 8800GTX and that runs on the VX450 with ease.

Pretty sure it will work, but to be honest I would upgrade to a more modern PSU model as they have better 12V rails, and are more power efficient anyway.

What would be wrong with keeping my current one? Would there be any risk of it breaking?
