hi all

been a while but ive got a problem and i cant sort it out

at the moment ive got normal broadband and my router is setup like this

main socket >> extension all the way up stairs >> router in loft coming down to >> to 2 pcs and xbox using the the ports on the back of the router.

im get upgraded to fiber and i wanted to go

main socket >> router >> cat5 cablle up stairs >> 4 port switch >> to pcs and xbox

so that i cant keep main boxes downstairs for wireless

ive bought a switch and tried it today and it wont do xbox or other pc mine is fine tho

am i doing something wrong

main socket >> router >> cat5 cablle up stairs >> 4 port switch >> to pcs and xbox

Should work - I have a similar setup, but with 2 homeplugs rather than a cat 5 cable

Check that all of your cables are good and make sure the switch actually works, but other than that you should be fine

yes it all works to my pc off of one of the switches ports but it wont work to my sons room but his cable run is longish will that effect it.

it doesnt go to xbox at all and when i plug into his pc it just flashes on and off the network screen.

UPDATE

IVE JUST TRIED SOCKET >>> EXTENSION >>> ROUTER >>> LONG CAT5 CABLE >>> SWITCH >>> XBOX AND PC AND ALLS FINE

BUT WHEN I DO EXTENSION >>> ROUTER >>> SWITCH >>> LONG CAT5 >>> XBOX AND PC AND IT DOESNT WORK

MY PC ON THE OTHER SOCKET WORKS BOTH WAYS

If it's under 100 metres you should be fine.

BUT WHEN I DO EXTENSION >>> ROUTER >>> SWITCH >>> LONG CAT5 >>> XBOX AND PC AND IT DOESNT WORK <--- this seems to show two deivices connected into a single cable which obviously isn't possible. What's actually happening here?

MY PC ON THE OTHER SOCKET WORKS BOTH WAYS

Is the long cat5 cable the same in both cases?

Is the short cat5 cable between the switch and device in the first test and the router and switch in the second test the same?

all cables are same just moved switch

its weird that it works at the end of the long cable but not the beginning
