Hi guys, i'm going to upgrade this week but can't decide what do get, my current rig is below in my sig and i mainly game on it so looking for max fps per £ i also like to run everything with high/ultra and i game @ 1920x1080

The games i play are fallout 3 & vegas with loads of mods and graphic improvements, battlefield 3, crysis 1, warhead & 2, farcry 3 when it comes out, stalker SOC, CS & COP all with the complete mod and maxed settings some RTS games, shooters like COD, Metro, and open world games like just cause 2, saints row 3 and GTA 5 when it comes out

total budget is can be upto £750 ish with selling my old bits, i was going to just upgrade the gpus but psu age is stopping that idea so been looking at a full upgrade using my current psu and getting a new more powerful one next month

this is where i'm at right now:

now after that is going to be the problem, i could keep my 460's and leave it at that until the 660's come down or possibly get a 680 if i can find one for the right price, there's the 670 but not sure it will provide the big boost i'm looking for in battlefield 3 or a new one for me i could get and AMD card with xfire as an option????

so what do you think guys?

thanks for the quick reply i thought i would get that :) the reason i want a sandybridge is they are proven clockers (i want 4.5GHz+ ideally) from what i have read the ivybridge chips have a heat wall or something like that and clocking above this creates massive heat output.... this might have changed tbh :) i have been mainly looking at gpu's since just after ivy come out, would you also help out with cooling for the cpu as i'm not sure my thermaltake frio will fit

with the 670 do you play battlefield 3 online? if so what's it like right now with my currant rig it's not fun online i'm a little rusty with my aim but even on medium it's sluggish and haven't played it for a couple of months (this was with just 4Gb, not tried it with 8Gb)

single player was good i could play with high setting on most things and get good 40+ fps

that will be good more money for a gpu , cheers idleman :) will check if i can find the 1156 mounts anyone know what they are like cooling i5's?

so has what i have read about ivy wrong? as i said not done any reading up about ivy since just after launch

also the gigabyte board and ram are around the same cost and look to have less pci-e lanes with 1x 16@16, 1x 16@8 & 1x 16@4 with me being a big fan of sli rigs the more lanes the better (do need to check the msi specs and reviews) but spec on the product page says 3x 16x

looks like i'll be getting a 670 with the option of 1 or 2 more later :D

good to hear the cooler will do the job

thanks again idleman i plan on ordering the board and chip tomorrow (rumour is nvidia are getting ready to drop some prices in response to the AMD drop so will hold off on gpu for now lol)

so what's your view on the sandy/ivy question as i see you have a 2500k yourself, would you buy one today or go ivy? it's the heat thing that worrys me during the 5 or so days it was hot my room was so hot i had to cut a hole in the wall and put a shroud round the back of the pc to vent the heat out of the room aided by 2 fans :D so heat is a little bit of a worry, watercooling isn't an option right now as i want to get a top notch loop and do things properly this time

TBH, if i did`nt have the 2500k and was looking for an upgrade, i would go IV without a doubt. But if you are looking to OC @ 4.5 with the IV, then i would get the K2 or Phantek cooler. Just get as good an OC as the Frio permits, until you get your top notch loop. Besides, for £6 it would be silly not to get it. And i don`t have a heat problem in the flat and my pc is right in front of the balcony window, facing west.

ok cheers mate looks like ivy it is :D, i will let you know about the fans may even do a build log as it's been a while since i've had the time, i'm going to spend the rest of today benching my rig as is then after each upgrade

yeah my son's not got a heat problem as he's right next to the window as well, i'm in a room created by splitting my front room into an office/ bedroom it's to only way to get a little peace from the kids but it did get very hot around the 30'c mark now it's about 21'c, will have to mod it for winter as it saves on heating costs :)

just thought it's been a while since i got any paste i think i have a little mx5 somewhere but not sure if it's any good, so what's the best right now as i may as well grab some when i order :)

just found this while trying to find info on paste and got me thinking again about the cpu i really want (not need lol) around the 4.5GHz mark as it seems like an easy task with the 2500k but reading this
Well all I can say is I don't think you will get them temps with a 3570k, it's possible with a 2500k, but I just went from a 2500k to 3570k, the 2500k was fine with temps, max of about 60c no matter what at 4.6ghz and 1.392 vcore, the 3570k on the other hand will do 4.5ghz at 1.320 vcore, stable, but prime95 will send temps into mid 80's on a full custom water loop, but if you fancy deliding:eek: the 3570k then all should be well again regarding temps.
being as i run my rig 24/7 i'm thinking it might be better to get a sandy after all as i don't fancy deliding my shiny new chip to fix the paste issue on the ivy's and as above the child in me wants 4.5GHz lol
