OK, bought some brand new components from OCUK.

First problem I had was that the cooler for the CPU arrived with one the blades snapped off. Not a huge problem, I spoke to OCUK who said they would sent me a replacement due to arrive today. Nothing has arrived yet and the tracking details are as follows, "we cannot find details of your parcel".

That's disturbing but it's the least of my worries.

I built the PC ready for when the new cooler arrives. No problems there, installed all the components properly. Made sure the motherboard was seated properly, that both the 24 pin and 4 pin connections were installed. I installed the cooler with one missing blade temporarily just to see if it turned on. I figured it might be a bit noisy but it will provide adequate cooling for the small period of time when I checked the BIOS.

So then I turned it on. The fans move for about 2 seconds and then there are four beeps and the computer turns off. What the hell? This to me suggests a dud motherboard. I've checked all connections, reseated the ram, tried it with only one stick of ram and the graphics card completely removed. Same thing every time.

I have been trained by the RAF to build and fix computers and have done so countless successful times in the past before anyone points the finger :p

So like I said, this is probably a duff motherboard right?

could be an issue with the boards bios not supporting and ivybridge cpu? esp if its got an older bios on there?

other thing to try is to try and beg or borrow another psu to test with, thats all i can think of off hand

if the bios chips pull out like on asus/asrock boards then you can buy an updated bios and plug it in,if they are soldered on then you might need a sandybridge cpu to update/flash to the latest bios that supports ivybridge

The manual doesn't say anything about the beep codes. I've done the paperclip test on the PSU and it's fine.

A quick google suggests 4 short beeps - System timer failure.

Perhaps wazza was right about the BIOS, there are updates for this mobo. I don't think anything is broken tbh. Perhaps I can send the motherboard back and purchase another one with a z77 chipset?

a z77 would be a better choice,z68 is older though not much different, you have 14 days dsr rules i think

I have contacted OCUK, they want me to send them the motherboard and CPU for checking.

Hopefully the boys over than can sort me out :)

Right, so I sent the CPU and motherboard back to OCUK and they promptly replaced both units.

Received the replacements this morning and fitted them straight away only to find that the computer still won't turn on!

The fans spin for a second and then the computer restarts but there is no beep.

I rang OCUK and they suggested it must be a PSU problem, so I went out and bought a new one and still nothing has changed.

This is ****ing me off, these were all new parts from OCUK. The fact the stock cooler fan had a blade snapped off on arrival suggests to me that these items were not looked after correctly in either packaging or transit. It's annoying to have spend £500 on what has only so far been a ball ache and cost me extra money in postage.

I've tried running it with nothing but one stick of ram in all four slots seperately, taken the CMOS battery out and changed the PSU.
