hi ya,

I have a REAL big problem ... and it's quite prob. n00bish ....

i have a sata drive in my system just for data storage ( OS on an IDE )

turnned off the computer and unplugged the sata drive, and put in it's place a new sata drive and turnned on computer and started to copy files over to new sata drive ( dad wanted some stuff on his new sata drive).

turnned off machine and put my old sata drive back in ... booted up .. and NO drive in "my computer " ... !!

went into storeage manager and the disc is there ,... but says it is
"unallowcated space"

tried system restore, etc ... but did not work.
I haven't formatteed the drive .... think i might have lost the MBR or something ???? ( getting out of my depth here now ... )

please help ......

I'm a little desprate ..... !

Also .... i would like to know WHY it happened ....???? I can plug my (dad's ) new sata drive back into my system and it reconises it fine and the data is acessable ... so is it something i did wrong ..????

thanks

no i don't ..

I have convert to dynamic disc ... i think that's it . ( at work atm)

DEF. don't have import option .... or i would have probably tried it.

note that SATA is plug and play, so try booting up PC, when fully booted in windows, FIRST plug in SATA cable, then plug in SATA power cable.

give it 5 min as this often can halt the system, and make it look like it's crashed, but it hasn't.

If after 5 min, nothing or the system is still halted, remove SATA power cable and give couple of min, everything will be back to normal.

try again if it don't work first time, if no luck, just try another SATA cable or in another PC.

EDIT:
This has happened to me before actually, i used a prog called: "Active@ Partition Recovery" (add me to your MSN/e-mail me & I'll send u the file)

Use this to restore the MBR (in Dos mode), and backup everything on that drive onto another, then do a low level format on that Hard Drive to make sure it is not corrupt and to clean it properly, then use it again as normal.

I think the prob is often cause by the Mother board though, as i think that was the prob when it happened to be a couple of times.

thanks, i will try the program when i get home.

another program i though of using is:

partition table doctor @ http://www.ptdd.com/fixboot.htm

( if it is a file partition error .... )

or

get data back from http://www.runtime.org

the more i look into this people have told me that XP doesn't like sata drivers .. and motherboards don't like SATA. .. don't know if any statments are true but it does seem that SATA drives can be problematic if you start messing about with them ! - boy am i never going to unplug it again ! :)

will let you know how i get on.

thanks

YES YES YES >>

got it back with partition table doctor ! ( worked like a charm ..... )

had to buy it ... but £24 no big deal .... !

just wonder HOW i lost the partition table .....

any ideas peeps ..??? would like to know for future referance ....

sometimes it's just one of those weird things with HD's!

one thing i will still suggest you do is transfer all the files to another HD and do a low leval format, etc (see my previous post) just to make sure the entire HD is ok, also when u copy the files back, it will re-make the partition table/file lists properly.

if u want to be on the safe side, there should be an option in that prog to backup the MBR just in case it happens again and the restore don't work. i've had that prob in the past.

yeah will def. back up the MBR.
I will low level format the HDD once i have backed it all up ( going to buy a 2nd HDD and mirror the 2 aswell i think )

did try to back it up with nero last night, .. got the the 13th disc ... and went to bed ... to find out the operation had timed out waiting for the next disk ! ! ( nero doesn't like me sleeping then ! )

is there any other prog. that i can use to back up about 160gig of files onto dvd's ..??
