hey guys been trying to service my dads PC and something very strange has happened... started it after after plugging in an ssd but the cpu fan is not spinning when connected to the cpu fan header.

stock intel cooler
gigabyte ga-p35-ds3l

it spins for half a second when powered on, and then half a second when turned off...
fan turns constantly when when plugged into a sys fan port.

gpu fans and sys fans come on, gets into bios with one stick of ram in, but how long can i run it like this for without damaging the CPU? amd chips fry in seconds, i know.
should the intel fan only come on when it gets hot, so not in bios?

so... pc was presumably working ok... THEN i did the following...
re seated ram (as 2 out of 4 sticks wasn't even in properly!),
unplugged HDD, plugged in SSD,
took out cooler + CPU,
cleaned cooler + CPU,
put cooler cpu/back in...

is there a chance i could have put the cpu in the wrong way? There was no ">" mark on the corner of the mobo but thought i remembered which way it goes back...
would it e:confused:ven get to bios if cpu was in wrong?

***EDIT - Seems to be an issue with ram - cpu fan does not start until after successful post!! ****

Did you have this system running with the side off beforehand? Are you certain the fan is always on? Larger heatsinks can do a great job at removing heat, and fans won't necessarily spin until a certain heat threshold is reached, depending how the bios is configured.

Start up the system and sit in the bios for 10 mins? Sit on the temperature read out screen and watch the CPU...

I'd be surprised if you even reach the bios if the CPU and/or ram was not seated correctly/sufficiently, typically i'd expect lots of beeping before that happens..

sorry should have said, its the stock intel fan...

i think ive found out its a problem with the ram...

basically, on this mobo (the gigabyte ga-p35-ds3l), the cpu fan does not kick in till AFTER post, 1 beep.

for some reason it does not like all 4 ram slots being populated, perhaps why the last person who built it, just left the ram sticks poking out.... lol... not very professional

i checked cpu-z and told my dad it was ruinning like a pile of **** because he only has 2 gigs of ram... he was a bit confused when i said actually he HAS 4gbs, just not plugged in.
I trusted cpu-z and bought 2gbs more new stuff.... whoops

any idea why it wont post with 4 ram slots populated? all 4gbs (4x1gb) are the same.... corsair xms2, 800mhz, 5-5-5-12, 1gb, xms2-6400

some of the longers numbers are diffferent, but i assume this is normal... some sort of batch numbers?

Tried a bios reset? Are the operating voltages the same? (should say on the sticks) and the timings?

Different operating voltages might be an issue, timings not so much(you can relax the timings to accomodate the slower sticks).

You could try bringing the memory speed down to see if an underclock provides more stability/compatibility...

P.S. If it's easier, list the part numbers for the different modules here and i'll go have a look for you.

right im not sure which are the part numbers, but ALL 4x1gb sticks say...

cm2x1024 - 6400, 5-5-5-12, 800mhz,
1024mb, xs2 6400
1.9v ver 7.3

then the first ((7) digit no here is the only one thats diff in each stick, as below), the (8) digit is the same in each module
1163967 - 08130828
" 76
" 68
" 65

the two new sticks ive bought are different in that;

stick 1 says "xms6405v5.1"
stick 2 says "1.90v ver 5.2"

and...

stick 1 says "623454 - 07310877-0"
stick 2 says "1226535 - 08150002"

Same issues with just 3 sticks? Some boards are a bit *iffy* with 4 sticks...

Both sets having the same operating voltage, so i'd say back off the timings manually and see if that helps also.

tried to install vista just now (so i can use the windows 7 upgrade CD), with all 4 sticks, as it POSTed ok, but windows restarted after 5 mins, and then wouldnt POST, so took the extra two DIMMs... eventually started to POST again...

when i took them out, they felt quite hot to the touch, normal for 1.9v DIMMs?

hmm, yeah ill try installing vista now then with just 3 dimms, hopwfully wont mess up on windows install again. i gotta do windows 7 upgrade yet. Arg. cursing my dad for not buying the full retail version now!

arg now it keeps hanging on the bit where you enter the cd key... really somehthing not right with this pc...

could it be that i enabled AHCI mode in the bios? i thought this was needed for SSDs, shall i turn it off? its making boot up quite slow, waiting for "enabling AHCI mode" each time?

will that make a difference? only a sata2 (3gb/s) mobo i think...

Start with the basics mate, you can boot and install on a single stick of ram. Put memory voltage on auto with one stick, get things stable, installed and work from there.

Might actually help to test each stick individually also, maybe there's a dud stick in there causing a problem.

I'm heading to bed now, best of luck with the problem solving matey..

cheers man, thanks a lot.

trying with one stick now, managed to get both vista and now 7 installed, but getting random freezing... not sure if thats anything to do with memory... usually get a bsod from windows with memory issues? ill figure it out, thanks for all your help dude. night

Yeah, some motherboards don't like 4 slots being used. My last mobo forced me to use my 4 slots at 1066, at 1333 the RAM would bluescreen, even though the ram was rated for 1333, and the motherboard specs said it could run at 1333.

Try lowering them to 667 and 5-5-5-15

Edit;
If that doesn't help, try this http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18261596
Memtest86+

Run Memtest86+ to determine if your problem is RAM related, rather than PSU, Hard drive etc.. Memtest86+ is a superb free utility that performs a series of tests to check memory stability. If there are any problems with your RAM or addressing RAM, then Memtest86+ will tell you.

However, notice I choose the words “RAM related” rather the faulty. If Memtest86+ reports an error or errors then this doesn’t necessarily mean the RAM is faulty, it just means that the system can’t use the RAM for some reason. It might be the BIOS settings are incorrect so your RAM could be operating at the wrong speed (see check settings below). Furthermore, it could be faulty memory controller or system bus.

Nor can Memtest86+ tell which module or channel is faulty if that were the case. In order to find if the RAM is actually faulty and indeed which modules, you’ll need to perform some further diagnostic tests (See “One at a time Please” below).

Memtest86+ runs directly from a live bootable CD or DVD, so Windows isn’t necessary. Simply download and follow instructions on how to create and use the utility. Leave Memtest86+ running for a few hours but keep an eye on the first five minutes or so as any faults are likely to be shown then. Any faults will be shown in red as shown below.

Memtest86+ is great for detecting RAM related problem but it doesn’t mean your RAM is faulty

cheers man, i have it on cd somewhere. Its posting fine with 1 stick or 4 sticks now... im not sure if the problem is ram related, but ill try memtest anyway...
-even with one stick in, i still get the momentary hanging/freezing...

what happens is the mouse pointer still moves around, but clicks do nothing... sometimes they do, the desired window will open, then again, clicks do nothing.
eventually, after a minute or so of many furious button presses or alt+ctrl+del, the system snaps back to normal.

should i make a new thread about how to fault test this issue? or do i just unplug everything, and start plugging things back in and see if i get an issue?

only things plugged in at the mo are SSD, 1 DIMM, CD, Sound card, GPU (ati 4850), wireless keyboard & mouse,....
pretty sure this is hardware related, as couldnt even install vista as same problem - it would hang as soon as the first screen (input cd key) came up.

any ideas guys??

If the old HDD still has windows on it, maybe test the system again using that drive? (without the SSD connected).

I've primarily seen hanging/freezing from faulty(or failing) HDDs.

Is the system showing this same problem under safe mode and/or when in the bios?

because you have 4 sticks, you'll probably need to increase the vdimm and MCH voltage (IIRC :p). a few years back, i had a p35-ds3l with 4x2GB in there with a q6600 overclocked to 3.4ghz. it was a solid setup with no problems at all. :)

thats what me and my dad thought, he said his pc was running slow (ridiculously slow), so i thought it was just his HDD almost giving up the ghost when i looked at it, as hdd was very noisy, so i said he would love an SSD...
ill show him what happens tonight to confirm if we had exactly the same hanging problem with his old hdd, or try it without the ssd yeah.

bios seems ok when ive been in there, havent tried safe mode yet, but did still get the hanging/freezing when installing windows... hhmmmmmmm
