please help!! no cpu fan?

Can you try the RAM in another system? Is it still doing the hiccuping with JUST the new RAM you ordered installed? Have you tried resetting the bios to "Load fail-safe defaults"?

While the problem could be the RAM, the issue is the motherboard could also be at fault due to something as simple as a faulty RAM socket or something as huge as the CPU failing.

**update**
right spoke to my dad and something similar was happening before the upgrade, but his task bar would go completely greyed out? then hang for 5 mins, then be fine.

I can now replicate/rectify the problem easily - EVERY boot into w7 starts with taskbar not responsive. Desktop icons open their respective windows, but the windows themselves cannot be dragged/clicked.

can be rectified by pressing alt+ctrl+del. then, the "cancel" option is not clickable for about a second, then its fine, pc goes back into windows, acts perfectly.

*Tried*
>safe mode
>reducing memory speed to 667mhz (cannot see ANYWHERE how to set timings/volts)
>changing various BIOS settings (such as removed fine cpu clock ratio of +0.5, set perf enhance to standard)
>loaded fail-safe defaults (apart from keeping AHCI mode enabled)

*Will try soon*
>new ram i ordered, in 2 of 4 slots
>use mem test on all 4 dimms, in all 4 slots (downloading now)

THANKS FOR SUGGESTIONS GUYS, really appreciate it

Try increasing memory voltage controller voltage, with 4 sticks generally the memory controller likes moar powa :D

two odd things ive noticed are the SSD (only hdd installed) appears as a removable drive in the bottom right of task bar (as if it were a usb stick you were safely going to 'unplug')

also, the heatsink on the motherboard is very hot, this normal with a core 2 duo e8500? the memory also feels hot to the touch, but i guess @ 1.9v, it would be? bios shows mem running at 1.890v.

hw monitor shows...
system = 38oc
cpu temp = 25oc
core temps = 35/34oc

unbelievable... i think it was the mouse/keyboard causing the lockups!!!

have tried exactly the same model, which is my current pc keyboard/mouse (as oppose to my old ones which i use for testing/setup of new pcs) and no lockups after startup as of yet... fingers crossed will not lock up though useage
