Please help! Pc for bf!

So many replys thank you, he doesn't need a blue ray just wants 1 I'm guessing he can use the cd drive he has? Would prefer a pre build, but he should be able to put it together, just whatever is the cheapest option, but best for money

Thank you

to be able to play most modern games you will need a dvd drive.

Honestly, don't worry about buying him a new PC, just either get him a new graphics card only or just give him a home made voucher for X amount that he can spend on what he wants ;)

This way, you're still being a great girlfriend, and if what he gets does not work out then its his fault :p

Thinking from AHarveys Point of view you could always say "Heres X amount of money" go on Overclockers and buy a pc." Then he gets exactly what he wants.

Ok I will try to reply to all the questions, he can still use e case he has as long as it all fits in, I mean he a dvd drive.

It's a nice idea to get him voucher or money etc but I would prefer to get him the computer or parts just way I like to do it as then I can wrap them all up Haha

Women love wrapping presents, will never understand why. I can understand why you'd rather buy something rather than a gift voucher. The suggestions you will get from here will be the same he would have gotten anyway.

This would be fine.

If he needs a case just ask.

depending on your bf's "morals" he may not wish to pay for windows 7. I don't actually know many people running a legit version.

While I don't want to get into a debate about piracy or anything like that. Your bf might rather that money was spent else where. I know many of my friends would be annoyed if I took £60 off the gpu to buy them windows 7 on their pc instead.

But I'm sure you know him well enough to know if he'd rather you bought it for him or not.

Not much of a birthday present. "Here's a new PC, but about the O/S... you'll have to illegally download that".

But I do agree with you, a lot of people prefer to download a copy, it's even easier than buying one now days.

If he overclocks he will want the p67 mobo.

Well I would argue that seens as he's still on xp he probably isn't the piracy type. But still, if he was he'd probably rather not spend the money.

Encouraging piracy is, I'm sure, against forum rules. Windows 7 64bit is, despite criticisms, by far and away the best gaming OS on the market at the minute, and certainly worth the dosh. There are cheaper and even free versions if you or your bf happen to be a student, and you can get Windows + HDD bundles.

Besides that, pirate copies are riddled with rootkits and other nasty bits of work. Just get a legit version.

Well, I would go with Cmndr_andi's suggestion. The problem is sourcing a Q6600, or quad-core equivalent. But even his current processor is reasonable. He has 4GB, optical drive, hard drive, a case, so that's good too. His graphics card is lacking, for sure, and that will probably need a new PSU.

- Win 7 retail if he does plan on upgrading the rest in the future, OEM otherwise.
- New PSU (550W+).
- best graphics card you can afford (5850, 5870, 6950, 560).
- Finding a compatible quad-core (Q6600).
- a Cooler (Hyper 212+, Corsair A50) for overclocking the CPU.

something like this, plus a quad core.

+1

If the OP's BF is using XP OEM and keeps the existing motherboard then he could buy the cheaper "Upgrade" Version of Windows 7 Home premium - and if he is a full-time student then he can get it mad cheap (around £40). If he has a retail version of XP then he could buy an upgrade version of Win 7 and even use it on a new motherboard (at least I think this is kosher).

As for finding a Q6600, it can be a bit daunting (certainly less straight-forward than buying direct from a shop), but if you look for a Q6600 with the spec code:"SLACR" (G0 stepping) from a seller with a good rep and set your maximum price to £80 then you shouldn't have much bother finding one.

I haven't said he should pirate. I'm simply stating if he does then it would be a waste of money in his eyes. This is a present for him after all. You wouldn't buy someone something they didn't want regardless would you.

Is that so.

Either way I said I didn't want to get into a debate about piracy. All I was doing is pointing it out in case it applies.
