Hello,

While I'm contemplating on getting a cheap 580, I found that my PSU (600W Thermaltake) does not have a 8pin nor a 6+2pin PCI-E cable, it only has 3 6pin PCI-e cables. So I will need an adapter.

OcUK sells 6pin to 8pin adapters (like thin one: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CB-033-AK&groupid=1929&catid=153&subcat=), but I've read that it could be a bad way to go as 6pin cable has 75W while 8pin has 150W. So really I would need a 2x6pin into 8pin cable like this one

Cant find it anywhere though:o Does anyone know where I could get one?

I can't post competitor links but if you google "molex to 6+2pin PCI-E" or "2 x Molex to 8pin PCI-E Power Adapter Cable" then the first link is for a well known auction site. If that is what you need then the seller has one. It looks like it is home made from the look of it. The second search is cheaper but comes from Hong Kong.

I wouldn't worry about the 75W limit as if your PSU has the 6 pin connector it will be the 75w limit.

Andi.

I thought you cant post competitor links for stuff that OCuK sell themselves, in this case OCUK does not sell the item, so its not in competition?

Anyway, I googled your key words but it came up with 2x 4pin to 8pin PCIe adapter, not 2x 6pin to 8pin

Sorry, dont get what you mean... If i attach 2 6pins (at 75W each) to one 8pin - then I do get the required 150W.

What PSU do you have? It might be able to output the 150w on a single 6 pin connector, hence a normal 6 pin to 8 pin adapter will be fine.

He's suggesting a molex to PSIe adaptor, which is another way to go. Rather than using the PSU's PSI Experess cable, you use one of the 4-pin molex cables and attach that to the graphic card via an adaptor.

It's Thermaltake 600W.

4 pin Molex is rated for 60W, 6pin PCIE is 75W, I need 150W for 8pin. So 2x molex is not good enough, need 2x 6pin PCIE

Check a certain auction site ;)
I did, but cant find these things, only 1x 6pin to 8pin or 2x molex to 8pin... could you pm me a link if this really breaks OCuK policy (cant see how, since they dont sell them)?

If your 6 pin connector has 3 yellow +12v just use that and cut up a connector
to add the 2 additional earths

http://www.allpinouts.org/index.php/PCI_Express_(PCIe)_8pin_power

I have not done it for a while but I recall the 6 pin will plug in to an 8 pin
(which really offers nothing over the normal 6 pin connectors that have 3 yellow +12v wires)

I believe original 6 pin spec was only the 2 outer yellows, if that's on your psu you will need to add the middle yellow 12v also.

Yeah, I've bought the 1x6pin to 1x 8pin in the end, could not find the 2x6pin anywhere, and found that my PSU is actually meant t run with 1x6pin to 1x 8pin, so looking forward to receiving the 580 :)
