hi guys, ive just recently built a new pc and now would like to overclock it but i dont really know how. ive been reading a few posts and 3.0ghz + is achievable with the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0? more is better because im a heavy gamer.

my system spec is :-

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0
Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 XMS (4-4-4-12)
Nvidia 8800GTX 768MB GDDR3
Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R Socket 775
Corsair HX Series 620W Modular PSU
Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB
Windows Vista 64bit home primium
Antec P182 Gunmetal Grey Super Mid Tower Case
Akasa EVO 98 Socket 754, 940, 775

i know you do the overclocking through bios and various ways so ill post the default settings

Robust Graphics Booster (auto)
CPU Clock Ratio (8x)
CPU Clock Control (Disabled)
CPU Host Frequency (mhz) (200)
PCI Express Frequency (mhz) (Auto)
C.I.A.2 (Disabled)
System Memory Multiplier (auto)
Memory Frequency (800)
High Speed Dram Dll Settings (Optional)
Preformance Enhance (Turbo)
System Voltage (manual)
DDR2/3 Overvoltage Control (normal)
PCI-e Overvoltage Control (normal)
FSB Overvoltage Control (normal)
MCH Overvoltage Control (normal)
CPU Voltage Control (normal)
Normal CPU Vcore 1.3250V

Any help is appreciated, thanks. :D

My q6600 vcore at 1.2375 V on mine and mines stock 6600 GO. Im going to whatch this carefully for advice on how to clock mine

The above shows the Default and the typically recommended settings for overclocking. This is from BIOS F4.

I increased DDR volts by 0.3 to give 2.1 – the recommended setting for my Corsair memory.

I’ve omitted some of the increases in 'CPU Host Frequency' I used but this should give you some idea.

I set PCI Frequency to 100 - some would some may not.

Test with say Prime95 for 10 mins or more before increasing the 'CPU Host Frequency' by a 'modest' amount.

When it fails increase Vcore. How high you want to risk is a matter of opinion. Vcore 1.45 seems reasonable to most - I believe.

The Vcore values shown were mine. You may need more or less for a given speed.

Watch your temps - many would argue don't go over around 70 C.

i tried the settings for 34.02ghz and my computer wasnt stable, blue screen and rolling re-starts

I hope that was 3.402 GHz :)

You probably need more Vcore for that speed. I think my chip overclocks easily.

Or try a more modest overclock.

I use CoreTemp and Everest to monitor temps. The higher Vcore the higher the temp.

after a few tries i got it stable running at 3.204Ghz, my pc didnt like increasing the ddr volts to 0.30 so i set it to 0.10 and the vcore to 1.40, ran prime95 for 5mins and no errors. thats a lot for the info

I’m pleased you’ve made some progress.

If you check you’ll find some using a lot more than 1.4v Vcore but I’ll let others recommend on that score.

If this is the same memory it seems to be rated at 2.1v but again I’ll leave that with you.

Good Luck.

the memory looks like this

full name is Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 XMS2 Memory Non-ECC Unbuffered CL4(4-4-4-12) E.P.P.DHX Technology

i have been reading a few posts and trying some new settings to increase the CPU Ghz, it seems most people use CPU-Z to show the core speed but howcome it doesn't recognise it, windows shows 3.2ghz but CPU-Z doesn't

Do you have speedstep etc disabled in the BIOS ie CPU IEST?

Advanced BIOS Features.

Edit: It's also showing as a B3 chip not G0.

Advanced Bios Settings

hard disk priorities (press enter)
First boot device (hard disk)
Second boot device (cd rom)
third boot (floppy)
password check (setup)
hdd s.m.a.r.t capability (disabled)
limit cpuid max 103 (disabled)
no execute memory protect (enabled)
cpu enhanced hal cie (enabled)
cpu thermal moniter 2 (enabled)
cpu eist fuction (diabled)
vitualisation technology (enabled)

i assume its a g0 because thats what it says i bought and payed for on my receipt.

cpu enhanced hal cie (enabled)
cpu thermal moniter 2 (enabled)
cpu eist fuction (diabled)

The normal recommendation is to have CPU Enhanced Halt, CPU Thermal Monitor 2, CPU IEST Function disabled - although I don't.

CPU IEST and I think also CPU Enhanced Halt will drop your CPU multiplier from 9 to 6 in low load conditions.
I've had CPU IEST disabled and CPU Enhanced Halt enabled and the multiplier still dropped to 6.

With your current settings If you increase the load on the CPU you will probably find CPUz showing the increase in the multiplier and the CPU speed up to 3.2 GHz.

I don’t use Vista but I’m not aware that CPUz has problems with Vista.

I'd get advice as to whether it's a G0 or not.

Ah. with prime95 running CPU-Z showed the correct settings.

i think from the batch number the chip is an B3 (L726A655)

is there much different between the two, i thought it was just less power consumption?

If you have the box - Product Code should refer to *****SLACR.

It could be that CPUz is not reporting it correctly with Vista – hopefully someone will be able to confirm that could well be the case.

product code is *****SL9UM, so they sent me wrong chip or i was unlucky and got older model? nothing i can do really is there.

It depends what you actually ordered.

If they sent what you ordered and the chip has obviously been used then I would think your options are very limited or non existent. You could ask them but I wouldn’t mention having overclocked it.

If they sent the wrong item then there should be more scope but I would get advice on your rights. They may be willing to exchange or at least give you a rebate.

Power usage ie temps and overclocking ability are the two main criteria.

I don't think the differences are major but they are there.

B3 chips should cost rather less than G0 units.
